Fenric Tries Once Again

Post by Fenric »

It is my firm goal to keep this thread as short as possible ... this time ...

Starting with, of course, ME!

Fenric Elteron, clan NorZilliar

Oldest son in a matriarchial family, married an incarnation of Myobi, half priest half wizard: Fenric has had an interesting life to say the least. Usually hangs out at Trog's these days and doesn't do much anymore.

Inari (NPC-ish)

Post by Fenric »

Inari is the goddess of rice: The plant itself. The cultivation of it. The products made from it. She has countless billions of worshipers spread across the various planes of existence.

Foxes are her children. Inari created foxes to watch over the grain and eat the birds and rodents that would destroy the sacred plant. Kitsune are her especial messengers: sacred foxes endowed with the ability to take on human or elvish form.

Inari is an agricultural and racial goddess. She is concerned predominantly with nurturing and growth. She is good, but it is the quiet good of the countryside rather than the formalized good of high society. We don't go on crusades. We don't try to win converts or convince people to change their beliefs. We don't really feel a conflict with "evil" beings at all, unless they threaten us directly.
Finally, since rice is a critical component in many economies across the multiverse, she is revered as a goddess of wealth and prosperity as well.

The worship of Inari is mostly personal. The sanctuary is open for prayer and meditation as you feel led.
There is a small ceremony at dawn every day, where the main sacred fires are lit.
There is a celebration at the full of the moon each month, and a quiet time of prayer at the dark of the moon.
There are major ceremonies and holidays at the times of rice planting, transplanting, and harvest.
The fox festival is held at the time when the wild cousins give birth. We feed them a special treat made with rice wrapped in fried bean curds.
Otherwise, the temple does not hold regular formal services.

Inari is not overly fond of ceremony: for it is not ceremony that will lead you to enlightenment.

All things have a spirit, and the spirit is in all things. But this perception is dulled by the impurities of physical life, and you fail to reach your true potential due to this. It is therefore in your best interest that you seek for purity in your emotions and your mind; for through that purity, your spirit may shine through. Ceremony is of limited value because the quest for purity begins and ends with your inner self. This is why the main altar generally houses a mirror, not a statue, on the altar.

The state of purity is difficult to explain, because it does not mean the same thing to everyone. Only by meditating on your spiritual state can you learn what things hinder you personally. An earnest, honest, open heart is needed for this. The goddess, who can read your very being, can help with this: but it is a private matter between you and her. Therefore we provide a quiet setting: a peaceful sanctuary free from distracting clutter, a quiet garden where you can relax your mind, a serene place where it is easier to distance your true self from your physical self and focus on what needs to be.

One more thing: purity is not merely a matter of eliminating that which is "bad". It is also a task of strengthening which is "good". Your task may be to grow in an area of yourself that you have neglected, or imperfectly developed.
Regardless of the details, when you know what needs to be done we provide the support, council, and assistance to help you do it.

------------

Inari is a 6 dimensional being of not inconsequential power and influence back "home", head of a sizeable agricultural corporation, who has a hobby of dabbling in the lower dimensions. She took up the "god" thing more by accident than intention, but has made it useful by collecting the energy from the worshippers in the lower and less sophisticated dimensions. Ususally, she gets portfolios by introducing rice and/or foxes in the first place, but if negotiations fail then her sizeable legal staff goes to work to enforce her patents.

Tamamo no Mae (NPC-ish)

Post by Fenric »

Yes, Tamamo from the kabuki play. Altered for my purposes.
No, not Tamamo from Naruto.

Tamamo is the oldest child of the 8-headed demon dragon Yamata no Orochi and a mortal sorceress who summoned him. At then culmination of a series of wars that resulted in the deaths of her father, mother, and sisters she escaped their doom in a coma that lasted for almost five thousand years.

She was rescued and through her heroic self-sacrifice saved the world from complete destruction. For her bravery, Inari offered Tamamo the chance to become a lesser goddess within her organization - an Offer Tamamo did not refuse. Tamamo's first assignment was the rearing the first of the Fenethi - the sand foxes - and as such they revere her as their ultimate mother.

Beyond that, Tamamo is now in charge of the nogitsune, the wild foxes, who do not see cooperation with human society as a priority. That can frequently seem evil from the point of view of said society but the truth is more of alliance and perspective than good and evil as she would say the sprawling and heartless domains of the humans are the ones that are evil. Tamamo and her followers are wild, free, and not at all afraid to defend themselves violently if need be. Through her father, she is also a Lady of the Shadows with substantial power over her family's corner of the land of eternal twilight and as such she is the goddess of the shadow vulpans, her descendants and those of her sisters who had children before the war.

Other NPC-ish characters

Post by Fenric »

I do not intend to "play" these characters on a regular basis. They exist to fulfil certain functions they are needed for within the temple. Some of these are from my "Tails of a Fox" setting and some are unique to the FFRP.

Malukhar - the Soul Smith, voice of the author: the most powerful deity in the Tails of a Fox universe. More directly in the story, a dwarven god who created the mechanism by which souls are assigned to bodies and directly fashioned the planet of Erda. His personality can be gruff, his means are frequently eccentric, and his accent is an atrocity. Rumor has it he can create souls (this rumor is true). He is the also the source of the non-interference mandate imposed on all the dieties of the Tails of a Fox universe.

Myobu Primerra - eldest of the Vulpan species (by almost ten minutes!), Myobu was created and then carried and birthed by an incarnation of Inari herself in ancient times on the world of Erda. Myobu is now a Messenger of the goddess and one of the better swordsmen in the universe. He has no magic apart from Inari, as he was a fighter in life.

Myobi Primerra - second oldest of the Vulpan species (by almost ten minutes), Myobi was created and then carried and birthed by an incarnation of Inari herself in ancient times on the world of Erda. Myobi is now a Messenger of the goddess and was a frighteningly powerful mage in her own right during her life, and that combined with the power granted her by Inari has her outclassing many who consider themselves gods.

Grandfather Koi - An enormous and ancient dragon-koi who moved to the temple for reasons nobody quite knows. He will give advice and assistance in exchange for gifts of seeds or saplings for his gardens and orchards.

Michaud Merisenne - the most accomplished and powerful biomancer who ever lived on Erda, Michaud is best known as the creator of a spell and process which allows any two even vaguely compatible people to have children together. This was commercialized by his family and became the foundation of the Merisenne Life sciences corporation. Michaud is effectively immortal by a process he has not divulged which left him as a cross of sorts between a lich and a flesh-golem.

Katrina Fitzgerald, clan Nef Kitre - Head gardener of the temple. Katrina comes from a sliver-mining family and was kicked out of a prestigous university program after she posed for the Playfox magazine. Katrina has become very good friends with the Fenethi population of the temple, and runs a Pet club for those of them who miss the old days...

Kenji - A young water dragon who lives in the temple pond, son of the former Knight of Inari, Illias. He is most often seen guiding people to see Grandfather Koi.

Agent One / Mephistopheles - The lord of frosty Cania, eighth circle of the nine hells, who frequently plays instigator to the antagonists of the temple.

Noriko, Hoshiko, Yumiko, Tsukiko - The other Ninetail sisters who pop up as needed. Hoshiko was voted "most likely to actually be evil"

The characters

Post by Fenric »

Caroline Primerra - 14 times "great" granddaughter of Myobi and now High Priestess of the Temple of Inari in Inside. Caroline is one of the daughters of the hightest ranking priestess in the most important temple of Inari on the world of Erda. But she is not eldest and was somewhat spoiled and not trained to the same standards of her older sisters. She was thrust into the priesthood when she arrived in the Nexus and truth be told she wasn't ready for it. She's doing her best, though... She married Steven.

Felina Merisenne, clan NomSile - she claims to be a granddaughter of Michaud's, though she isn't old enough... but then again, it is Michaud we are discussing. She is a high ranking priestess at the temple and was involved with Arlem Mersianne... might still be.

Keiko - Youngest of the children of Orochi and Chioko. Occasionally acting Messenger of her sister Tamamo, frequently acting on her own, almost always in trouble to one degree or another. If ever there was a loose canon on deck, she's it. But she means well... usually...

Other People

Post by Fenric »

The Celestial Bureaucracy - Of Daoist fame, led by the Three August Persons: the Yellow, Red, and Jade Emperors (though we've only seen Jade in anything I've done). The Ministry of the Right (Law/Civilization) and the Ministry of the Left (Chaos/Nature) and all the various people under them. They are the main divine force in the Tails of a Fox setting, but they're far from the only ones and they can be a right royal pain in the ass.

DART An ultra-lawful neo-Jacobin organization following the philosophies of Maximillian Robespierre.

Only through fear is true peace maintained,
only through terror are the wicked held at bay,
only through strength are the weak upheld,
only through death is life preserved.

Remember: "Libertie, Fraternatie, Egalatie, ou La Morte" is a THREAT. To sum it up succintly: "Make people scared enough of the consequences to ever even consider breaking the rules". Their main contribution to the Nexus is the infamous PIE device: the Portable Impossibility Excluder takes "Anti-Magic Zone" to new heights, creating an area where the Laws of Physics are strictly applied. This defeats not only magic, but also "superheroes", action movies, and a great deal of science-fiction. These have one serious shortcoming, however: when overloaded, the devices explode into a ball of purest chaos. Everyone hopes their final defeat truly was final...

The Hands of Darkness Not everyone on the Plane of Shadows is subservient to Orochi and his family. These emmesaries of the Lords of Ravenloft still seek to drag the Nexus kicking and screaming into the eternal torment of the Land of Mists. Named after various dark and deadly sins that each embodies, these formless horrors with burning red eyes are something nobody ever hopes to see.

Vulpans

Post by Fenric »

Vulpans are shorter than humans and generally have a slender build. They have medium length, reddish brown fur (white on the throat and belly), bushy tails, and moveable, pointed ears. They have short, angular muzzles that give them a vaguely fox-like appearance. They have humanlike hair that grows in when they reach approximately fifty years of age. Their maximum normal lifespan is 650 with an average closer to 500. They tend to be good at magic and completely unable to learn Psionic disciplines at all.

Male:
Average Height: 5 feet 8 inches
Average Weight: 135 pounds
Female
Average Height: 5 feet 11 inches
Average Weight: 185 pounds

History

Vulpans were created by Inari herself for the newly-fahioned world of Erda. As a botanist, she wasn't skilled with artificial development and so materialized an incarnation to carry and give birth to the first two in order to learn how it works. Since then, she has created 18 more strains (now with artificial gestation!) including the Snow Vulpans, Sand Vulpans, and Shadow Vulpans.

Culture

They live in a hierarchial, matriarchal society. The clans and families have prestige and respect based on their overall age, standing in the greater society, and historical precedent. The prestige order of the clans does not change easily (and by "Tails in Space" is essentially set in stone). The standing of families within the clan, however, is quite fluid - rising and falling by the family members' successes and failures.

The major clans on Erda, in order of prestige, are

0. Primerra
Derived from the Grey Elf word for "first", this smallest clan is closer to a family.
These are Myobi's direct descendants in matrilineal order of eldest and second daughters.
As a rule they don't participate in the main politics of the world, but their opinion is
highly sought after and respected. Their home is the independant city-state of WinterHearth,
of whom they are the rulers.

1. DuRoi - Derived from the Cheritanni phrase "of the King", this is technically a branch of the
NorZilliar clan that split off long ago. They ingrained themselves with the Cheritanni
royalty, and their surname in the kingdom is technically still Navarre. Their home is
spread across the northern coastal cities of the kingdom of Cheritanne.

2. NomSile - Derived from the Wood Elf phrase Nom'si'il le'ay, which means "hills of golden streams".
No points for guessing why they're as high in the ranks as they are: the gold panned from
the icy, swift-flowing streams in the hills of their valley makes them the wealthiest
of all the clans. Their home is Northvale, in the nominally human kingdom of Cheritanne.

3. NorZilliar -
Derived from the Wood Elf Nor'zil'li'ar, which means "hill of wine grapes". The mouth of
their valley has some of the best wine-growing regions in the entire world. They are noted
for their willingness to mingle with other races. Their home is Midvale, in the nominally
human kingdom of Cheritanne.

4. EnFilish - few details have been divulged on these clans.
5. EnReldi - the names have come up in passing, but I've never
6. NarCelma - really gone into any detail.

7. NefKitre - Derived from the Wood Elf Ne'ef ki'itre'e, which means "they dwell apart". The NefKitre are
very conservative and aloof as a general rule. Their home is Shouthvale, in the nominally
human kingdom of Cheritanne. They have maintained their status due to the profitable silver
mines in their area and through trade with the Gnomes and Troglodytes

Each family is led by the most senior Vixen, with the clan notionally led by the most senior Vixen of the most senior family. The leader of Clan DuRoi is also the High Lord of the Vulpans - it is important to note that the pronouns in their own language are always feminine, but carry the connotations of the masculine versions in English.

The Vixens are the dominant gender in Vulpan society. They are more aggressive, more assertive, more ambitious, and less accommodating than the males. They are still the driving force for home stability and planning, and consider children of the utmost importance. This leads to a society that is in general more passive overall than a comparable human society.

The males are quieter, shy of conflict, and more submissive: they are more likely to go along with what they are told or what they feel is expected of them. They are more active, curious, and wander-prone than the females. They tend to have less regard of "home", and a casual "whatever is necessary" attitude toward planning.
