Re: MERC

Olvisin takes the two halves of the flail from Kuvesh and starts trying to reassemble them, but without much conviction. It doesn't look like she'll be successful. Her brother searches through the room some more and comes up with a very large club, bound in studded metal.
"This one looks like it should be able to hold up when you use it."

Re: MERC

Eddie took the club and swung it, a little more gingerly this time. When it didn't immediately snap in half, he gave it a careful, but more convincing, swinging whoosh. Satisfied, he slung it across his back, then blinked when it simply fell to the floor.
"Oh. Right. Do you have some leather I could make a strap from, as well?" he asked as he picked it back up. "Hmm... now that I'm think of it, do you have some spare metal, acid, and crystals? I would like to assemble a Mana Concentrator here, as it is unlikely I will have the resources to make my own for some time yet; it is exactly as it sounds, an engine to absorb and store ambient mana."
He rummaged about in the metal belt pack he had put on over the armour, producing something that looked something like a glowing marble. "By default, I tend to set the output for these- an aetheric crystal that provides me with roughly one day's worth of mana. But it is also possible to set it to imbue a weapon or armour, or store mana in larger or smaller amounts, or even infuse a suspension to create a mana potion, if needed. The versatility and utility are why I feel comfortable asking to set one up here using MERC resources."

"We've got plenty of metal and acid. Crystals... not so much."
"Not close at hand, anyway." Kuvesh looks around at the cluttered armory.
"Depending on what kind of crystal you want, we can look, ask around or maybe dig it up. Magic isn't really out specialty, though."
"Our brother deals with it but I don't think he does anything with crystals."

"Metal and acids form the bulk of it; the crystals are just the starter and the storage mechanism. Honestly, anything with a crystalline structure will do; even ice, in a pinch, although for obvious reasons it doesn't last very long. Are you able to requisition funds for purchasing such things? I'm sure there's a magic market somewhere in a land with this much magic."
Eddie paused. "And thank you for being willing to allow me to work in your space. I know it is not always easy to permit others to use your tools or work area... if you are willing, I could start immediately, as I know exactly what I need, and I can see many of the beginning materials in the area from where I stand now."
Having said what he needed to, Eddie waited. If permission was given, and useable materiel pointed out, he would shuck out of the armour and get to work immediately.

"Oh, that sounds really cool! I don't have a camera yet either, so it'll be cool to be able to use one!" Said Kestrel, suddenly quite excited at the concept. Fayyaad and Val's implications soared amusingly far other the adventurer's head. These two definitely were selling her a lot more on the concept of picking up a phone though. "I'll let you know if I do!"
Valerie giggles. God Kes is cute. She doesn't pursue any further implications. She's flustered the other woman enough already today probably. "Great." Besides, if Kes did get a phone that'd be the time to have that fun. "Is there anything else you need help with on the form, by the way?" She leans over to see Kes's progress. They had been distracting her, but she must be getting close by now at least.

[Outside the Armory]
While the whole talking happens Quisp had made a bit of a mess, which can be heared if you aren't in a factory. During his testtasting he found something more interessting. A mice. The creature can't supress it's urge to hunt and follows the mice which tries to hide under tables, sofas etc. The sound of a broken vase is easily hearable and that of a table thrown down. Should someone react soon they might see Quisp on the end of the hallway trying to get the mice out of a hole in the wall.
One thing that is strange may fall into everyones eyes. In the vase were some flowers, which by this point seem to be rotten away faster then they should be.

"Eh, don't worry about it. The armory is a shared space, this is just our corner of it."
"We can requisition things, so if you're willing to wait a little you should have your materials eventually."
One of Olvisin's ears perk up. That was a suspicious noise, and with Quisp out there... she has a bad feeling about it.

Kestrel feels a little bit at a loss as to what Valerie is giggling at, but unconsciously notices that it is quite a cute giggle. Uh, no, no, I thiiiiink I know the rest..." She squinted at the form. Things were easier back home. Why such long forms were necessary, she didn't know. "Juuuust gotta finish it up."

"Still, I thank you again. You have been both knowledgeable and helpful, which is rarer than one might wish, especially when one is starting out in a new place." Eddie told them.
"If you would be able to show me how to requisition things, I would appreciate it greatly; although if it's likely to take more than five days, I had best find a job and bring in my own crystals for the time being."
And with that, Eddie slipped his new armour off and set to work shaping the metals he had been shown.

"Yeah, yeah! It'll be nice to see you around more for sure. I'll always keep an eye out. Oh, and it was nice to meet you too Fayyaad! Hope I'll see you round some more too!" She waves to him as he heads off, before returning to concentrating on the form, sticking her tongue out as she does so. It's not long before she finishes signing off at the bottom of the form. "Here, does this look good?"
Kestrel slides the form over to Valerie, and a quick scan will indeed show it complete, albeit with a bit of dodgy spelling and shaky handwriting.

Valerie gives Fayyaad a little parting wave as well, then accepts the form from Kes. She takes a moment to scan over it, then looks up with a smile. "This looks perfect to me. I'll get this processed right away. Hm, since you don't have a mailing address we'd normally ask you to come back to get your documentation, but how about I just bring that to you when I pick up the kids later this week. You're still doing the same schedule, right?"

Even Kestrel, as dense as she is, can't miss the wink. Her heart flutters just the tiniest bit, and a faint blush settles on her face. "Y-yeah. Will look forwards to it!" And with that, she made her way out the door, as the slow realization that she may have been flirting slowly settled into the little bird's head.

Today is a very normal day at the MERC HQ. Except for one thing. There’s a large black raven sitting on a perch on the front desk before anyone shows up to work that day. A very normal raven besides having two little feathers that stick up from the sides of its head. There’s a card underneath the perch.
Please be nice to the bird. He’s getting used to everyone. He is house trained.

Dipsnig sometimes does the rounds of the office before most people start working. It's more out of habit than anything else, really. And he's here today, Teerka following behind him on soft paws.
"A bird?" he asks himself. "I had no idea someone here had one. Now stay down, Teerka," he tells his wolf, who started sniffing in the raven's direction.

"Hmm. I have read ravens get along with wolves," Dipsnig says to himself. "Go on, Teerka. But be gentle."
The large wolf takes a few more steps towards the ravens and sniffs at it carefully.

The raven tilts its head and then turns it up as it primly hops forward and onto Teerka's head, settling down immediately.
For some reason, as the raven stares up at Dipsnig, it seems to be smirking in an awfully self-satisfied way.

At Home on the Range
When Eddie looks, this is where Sian can be found. She's a human woman in her early thirties, her hair dyed purple but the roots are blonde. She's got blue eyes and tanned skin, wearing a pair of khaki combat trousers and a heavy looking greatcoat with immense pockets. Oddly, she's also wearing fluffy pink slippers, making her shooting stance a little less steady than ideal. She's shooting a target very rapidly, a small 10mm submachine gun in her left hand. Her right hand is empty, held away as she tries to control the recoil single-handed.
Her coat is a potent magical artefact, heavily enchanted with conjuration and transmutation magic. The SMG is also magic, but far less so; created by the coat, it wouldn't last long separated from Sian.

The little golem approached Sian, waiting until she finished shooting, or at least paused, before interrupting.
"Excuse me? Are you Sian?" he asked, clearly a bit unsure of himself. Inside the guild, he was wearing his usual baggy red hoody and snug trousers, with the faint hint of glowing eyes in the shadows of the hood concealing his face almost completely.
"I was on a mission with Frigate, and we hit some plague zombies out near the edge of the continental shelf. He said that you had a run-in with some of those things in... Apocalypse Junction, I think the name was?"

Teerka sits down on her hind legs, seemingly content to have a raven perching on her. Dipsnig, meanwhile, narrows his eyes as his ears point downwards briefly. What is this bird? Something tells him it's not an ordinary raven. He walks around Teerka, trying to take a good look at the raven from all directions.

It's not long before the gunslinger has emptied the magazine and puts the gun back into her pocket. "Yeah, I'm Sian. Sian Farkas. You are?" She walks over to a chair and sits down, grabbing a bottle of hopefully-water and taking a swig. "Yeah, I've been to the Junction, saw some walking dead. Reasonably common, but not much of a threat. The big herds tend to stay away from the roads, for some reason. I saw two, the bigger was about twenty dead-heads. The Road Pirates usually keep 'em down, along with the other stuff you find out there. So long as you stay mobile or stay out of reach they're no threat, but... I cheat. I never run out of bullets. And I got a chopper, too. Very useful in navigating the Junction, so long as I keep away from the Martians." There's several other things in Apocalypse Junction that can threaten a helicopter, but the Martians are probably the most notable one.

"Dag Wenick Filias Edmond Lapis, second baron Hamilton, but please call me Eddie." Eddie said. The introduction felt both formal and a bit rote, like it was something that was expected but not necessarily something that the little golem put a lot of stock into.
He shifted a bit, holding one arm. "Also, is it not unusual to have them wandering around out fairly deep in the ocean? They didn't seem to be doing much other than going in a straight line, but I got the impression that you didn't normally get them out there. Certainly didn't see any others in the deeps. Sharkmen, fishmen, sea monsters, that sort of thing, but not underwater zombies in a conga line."

"Uhm... there's... there's a lot to unpack in that statement." Eddie said after a long moment. "I haven't been in the Nexus for very long, and apparently I'm from a world that's considered 'urban high fantasy', so... road pirates and martians are kind of new to me. As is not considering plague zombies a threat. Are they just not very infectious, or..?"Earl of Purple wrote: ↑May 05, 2024 6:00 pm"Yeah, I've been to the Junction, saw some walking dead. The raven sure seems to be a perfectly normal, if somewhat large, raven. Other than those two feathers poking out from the side of its head and curled up.
The bird seems to follow Dipsnig's gaze as he walks around it. Perhaps that marks intelligence. Maybe that's just a thing birds do when people stare at them.

"So, like, the Nexus is a big bowl hanging under every other world, right? And stuff falls down? Sometimes a world ends, and a whole bunch of grottiness comes down to the Nexus. It lands in the same place, emerging in Apocalypse Junction. The Nexus seems to put stuff where it'll feel most at home, so you get fantasy stuff congregating one place, and urban stuff elsewhere, and so on, y'know? Anyway, the Road Pirates aren't what they sound like. They're a biker gang. You know them, right? Hell's Angels and stuff? Martians are what they sound like. Men from Mars, with tripodal fighting-machines and heat-rays. Zombies can be highly infectious, but there's a lot of different types. Generally, don't get bitten. If you do get bitten, get magic healing. That works eighty percent of the time, and when it don't generally they're nanites not a disease, so they might not kill you, just... reanimate you when you die." Sian sighs.
"No idea about the sea. I've never been under it. Maybe? There's a couple beaches and cliffs in the Junction. I could see some wandering into the sea and getting lost, or washed down rivers or whatever. Not like most people are ever gonna notice they're there, right? In the Junction, zombies get taken out by all sorts. Mine fields, deathclaws, warbots, Triffids, y'know. Basically, of all the things you could meet, a lone zombie or a small herd's probably the least dangerous. At least they don't hide from you or shoot you. It's a dangerous place, everything there's a threat. Except the Road Pirates and the odd hermit or refugee that's stumbled into the Nexus. Road Pirates try to keep the roads safe." Not always successfully, but they try. They also get in trouble sometimes, and need to go somewhere they won't be arrested.

"Y'know, that's the clearest explanation of the Nexus anybody's given me since I got here?" Eddie said, sounding torn between gratitude to Sian and irritation at all the other people that he'd tried to pry info out of.
"And we have Hell's Angels back home, although from your tone, I suspect ours are a bit more literal than your version." he said with a faint huff of breath that might have been a laugh. "But yes, the general concept of 'biker gang' is familiar."
"If I get bitten, all that's likely to result from it is a zombie with a mouthful of broken teeth; I'm a golem." he continued. "Good to know that the lost zombies are probably not the vanguard of a much larger force, at least."
"Say, is there any kind of bounty on the Martians? And if there is, do they have any defenses against house-sized boulders at mach 3, or having their legs torn off and then used to beat their machinery to death? Because if it's a yes, then a no, then going martian-swatting might be worthwhile, since it sounds like they're problematic all around."

At Home on the Range
"Dunno, never met a Hell's Angel. Just the Road Pirates. Before I came here, I was a hired gun on several planets, with my own shuttle. Had a job take me to Skyside, and someone stole it, and parked a helicopter in its place. So I took the helicopter, since I had to leave in a hurry." Was it theft? Probably. Was she planning on escaping in her shuttle? Yes.
"Uh... not sure if there's a bounty. There's a lass in Vigil who'd pay for some samples if you could get 'em, I sold her triffid seeds once. She'd probably want cuttings of their red weed and maybe their black dust, too. But they are immune to having their legs torn off, because they ain't got legs. Their fighting-machines don't always have shielding, though, so you could probably lob a rock at 'em. Be careful, though. They take captives, so aim for the pilot or avoid the cockpit of any of their devices with a cage on the back." If Eddie has read The War of the Worlds, he may note some commonalities between the antagonists of that book and the entities that Sian's describing.
