Summary: An attempt to build a human up into the best possible monster hunter. She feels she's getting too old for it, but the violence must go on.
Species: human
Gender: female
Age: 51
Profession: monster hunter
Affiliations: MERC (planned), Vigil (planned)
Common Whereabouts: Outside, Apocalypse Junction, Riverside
Appearance: Twice as tall as the average human and built like a boulder hauler. A plethora of scars prove Kavi as a fighter, most notable of which are her heavily burnt right arm, a missing left index finger, and an axe wound across the corner of her mouth. Although Kavi smiles often, her eyes rarely show genuine happiness - more often they're weary. Her hair is often tied in a bun, messily so, and her clothing could stand to be washed more often. A lavish sari that has seen better days for free time occasions, an often-repaired
Nehru-style suit when on the job, and light power armour when expecting a confrontation.
Personality: Even now that she's been freed from the permanent contract with her creators, jaded Kavi dutifully carries out her purpose. Protect civilised society, find monsters and villains, end them. The reward money lets her live for another week while she trains to keep in shape, so she can do it again. But, truth be told, it's all so tiresome. Hedonistic evenings give her some joy, as hollow as it might be. If only Kavi could forever give in to a peaceful, lazy, indulgent life.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Kavi's success is built on three factors: ability, versatility, and reliability. Her physical capabilities are remarkable even for someone of her size and stature, and although she's not the greatest master in any one weapon or martial art, Kavi is proficient in many. As part of ensuring that she had no major exploitable weakness, Kavi has been made highly resistant to magic.
Ironically, two major weaknesses are rooted in those modifications for performance and safety. First, Kavi requires as much food as thirty normal human adults to maintain her body, and her gear and implants require specialist maintenance and repairs. Second, she's essentially a nobody to the machinations of fate. No dramatic family, no destiny, no notable blood, no notable legacy, no named weapons, no grand ambitions, no heroism. As formidable as Kavi is, some people simply have fate on their side.
Background: Almost fifty years ago, a mercenary organisation decided to invest in a big programme with hopefully big pay-off: yet another attempt to create an ultimate fighter, this time focused on the lucrative business of monster hunting and with minimised risk of going rogue. The Nexus was combed for child candidates, either orphans or with guardians willing to sell them, who were psychically tested for suitable characteristics. Youth was spent on gruelling physical exercise, honing mind and instinct, and endless martial training. Many ways to improve the body were employed, from simple nutrition over enchantment and gene therapy to advanced implants. The project was considered a practical success and Kavi could collect many bounties for powerful foes - but it had also been enormously expensive and put the organisation into debt. Business went well enough for several years until a rising competitor in the mercenary market, MERC, outcompeted Kavi's organisation for publicity, contracts, and bounties. Unable to keep up with costs, it was forced to dissolve. Now without a permanent contract, Kavi is finally free - for better or worse.
