Sophie smiles slightly. Braon rolled with it easily.

"Doing as well as she can. I don't need to tell you pregnancy isn't easy. And it turns out we're having twins. You might see her here eventually. Since we plan to put our boys into the daycare here from time to time."

[Treasure Hunting]

With this particular riddle, Manja thinks it's actually 'hunger'. 'Cause when you're hungry you can eat anything! Even birds, flowers, steel, and rocks, and so on. And one time she was really hungry and she definitely felt like eating a mountain. And! Her mom once told her a bedtime story about how a king took all the food from a town and then they all got hungry and then killed the king.

...

But.
As she hasn't actually said anything so far, she still says nothing.

The kitten yawns, and then looks at the huge rat and starts thinking she's a little hungry right now, too.

"Twins, you say?" Braon says, putting her hands to her cheeks in mock astonishment. "Oh, no, she must be feeling awful. Imagine having to carry two children at once. How does she ever get on?"

The fiendling steps up next to her mantlepiece, pulls off a palm-sized wooden box, and tosses it to Sophie. "Bark from a bhan tree. Steep it into some tea and give it to her sparingly. Worked wonders for me." She slides back into her chair and flashes Sophie her pointed teeth in what charitably might be considered a smile. "Have you got any names picked out?"

[Treasure Hunting]

"It's 'cuz time wears stuff down. Even hard, tough stuff. Everything gets old," Khannie clarifies for Lucy's sake, petting Manja while she does.

Because hey!

If you're holding a cat you may as well pet them right? Even if they're weird cat.

Khannie isn't sure if ghosts wear down, too, but she's willing to bet that they do.

"UGH! How are you all so good at riddles!?" the muskrat groans. "Fine. FINE! You win. Those two little knobs on the front of the treasure chest. Push them toward each other and it'll unlock."

Oooh. It was one of those puzzle boxes. That must have been why Lucy couldn't just yank it open.

"Because we're the best treasure hunters!" Tuskfang pumps his small fists in the air, enthusiasm filling him like a hot air balloon. He then strides forward to try to open the chest as instructed.

[Wormwood Cabin]

"Not everyone can be rough and tumble hardass like you, Braon. Two is plenty for most people," Sophie retorts. But she does take the box. "Their names will be Janos and Bertin. One name from Trick's homeland, one from mine. They'll be tieflings like her, but with crocodile tails. Bit of a side-effect of the method we used to conceive."

"Damn right." Braon nods at "rough and tumble hardass", barely hiding a proud smirk. She's not entirely certain if Sophie meant to give ger such an earnest compliment while rebuking her, but if that's going to define their relationship from now on, she'll take it.

Her face falls when Sophie goes on to explain what their children are going to look like, and for a moment, she just stares at Sophie with a vaguely worried expression on her face, before letting off a little shudder and sitting back down. "Gross." She mutters to herself, pulling her stew pot off the fire.

"...I'm... hoping you mean to say you had intervention from some kind of crocodile spirit or something." She continues, ladling some stew into an earthernware bowl. "But then... is that really wise?"

"It was a deal." Sophie notes Braon's attempt to be empathetic and approves of it. "We asked a specialist about ways Trick and I can conceive despite our... incompatible equipment." She makes air-quotes as she says it. "She knew of a way a spirit can help. She summoned him and I spoke with him. Negotiating with spirits is... something of a role I was given when I was Exalted. He agreed to help in exchange for heaving a physical mark. Crocodile tails and an affinity for water were acceptable to us and pleasing to him."

[Wormwood Cabin]

"That's... suspiciously generous."

Braon sets her stew bowl aside and fixes her gaze on Sophie, maintaining eye contact throughout the rest of her lecture. "From what you're saying, that sounds like all upsides for you. You get children and they get affinity with water and they get badass crocodile tails, in a place where nobody's going to give them a hard time over it." She folds her hands under her chin and rests her head there. "And if you're really a bargainer, you of all people should know that anything that's smart enough to make a deal will try to get as much out of it as they can. And it's always going to be something more than what you think you're giving up."

Braon lets out a little sigh. "...Not much to be done about it now, I suppose." She mutters. "But keep an eye on the little ones. Both, if you can spare them. You don't want to be caught off-guard when the bill comes due."

She's more concerned about the contents of the treasure chest, though, so she crowds around it with Tuskfang.

Sophie can't really fault Braon's caution here. After all, dealing with spirits is never precisely safe.

"I know what you mean. But we went to a specialist about it. Astrana from MERC, not sure if you've heard of her. The spirit she summoned wanted to help us conceive. Helping give birth to a children with his influence is something that drives him." She nods. "But we'll keep an eye on things once they're born, of course. I hope they get along with your bundles of joy."

"...So, I want to make sure I've got this right." Braon begins, pinching the bridge of her nose between two fingers. "You went to a warlock, who might have her own agenda, at a mercenary guild, which might have its own agenda, to enlist the help of a crocodile spirit, who might have his own agenda, in order to magically conceive a child... when you could have just gone into Trog's and asked if any of the men there found your wife attractive?" She gives Sophie a little frown. "Adea's sake, Sophie, it's like you're asking for someone to screw you over."

Manja isn't a weird cat!
She's probably sort-of half aki-something or other! Just because she can't pronounce it doesn't make it weird!
...She's okay with the hand-pets, though. She doesn't mind.

And she still holds that hunger makes more sense as the answer than time. Everything gets hungry, not everything gets old.

Oh well, though. There's a reason she's Princess Shadow Mistress Manja, Ruler of Everything, and thus has chosen to delegate the riddle-solving duties to her subjects. And she made the right decision to let her subjects to solve these. Especially Tuskfang, in this particular riddle-solving contest. Wait, didn't each of them solve one? That's good, Manja thinks.
Manja yawns.

She decides she'll be magnanimous and allow her knights to examine the treasure first.

[Treasure Hunting]

"Yeah, I mean, sure? You'll learn about it in science classes. It rains on mountains and the water gets into little cracks and then freezes when it gets cold. That pushes the cracks a little bigger. And that keeps happening over and over again until the mountain starts falling apart."

Science!

This is it.

The moment of truth.

Tuskfang pushes the chest, popping the latch and throws it open! And within?

A whole bunch of GOLD COINS!
(actually gold foil wrapped chocolates, enough for all the kids at Glog to get some!)
But that isn't all. Just like the last treasure chest our heroes found, this one is full of little trinkets and baubles that stir the imagination and wonder.

A geode like the huge geode room in miniature, it flashes rainbows everywhere when light shines on it.
An incredibly ornate silver spoon.
A tiny goblin-sized mattock with an intricately caved mushroom-wood handle and a head of faintly luminous white metal.
A little glass jar with a feather in it made of fire.
An hourglass full of black sand
A small leather pouch full of sapphire acorns with pyrite caps that feel faintly warm to the touch.
A single iron bell, speckled with rust.
A small sack filled with completely unremarkable looking beans.

[Wormwood Cabin]

Sophie can't quite mask her consternation. She suppose she shouldn't be surprised about Braon's trust issues that lead to paranoia...

"I know what agenda Astrana had. It was money. We hired her to help us. And she referred the spirit to us. She'd done it to other couples before. Also, neither Trick nor I are supposed to have sex with anyone but each other."

Maybe it's a cultural misunderstanding and Braon's not used to monogamy?

[Treasure Hunting]

Tuskfang is enchanted, awed even, by the sight of the treasure. It's all so cool. Treasure hunting is just the best.

"I want the mattock!" he declares immediately.

"And yet you were perfectly fine with a spiritual threesome. Presumably, not far from where this Astrana helped to call up the spirit in the first place, which would mean she was still nearby and possibly witnessing the event, yes?" Braon snarks, tapping out her ladle on the stew pot before setting it aside. "No, you really don't get to play the 'monogamy' card here. If you'd just gone out and found yourself a snaggletoothed stranger who was willing to act as a donor, you would have involved far fewer people who would have been in far less of a position to come around with a hidden agenda later." She plops back into her seat and fishes a chunk of meat out of her stew, popping it into her mouth and chewing plaintively. "Yeb, I know. You brobably bink ub me ab a slub. Bud I wab, ironibly, being saber about ib." She swallows and gives Sophie a little frown. "So, go ahead. Tell me how I didn't do what I was 'supposed' to and how it worked out so much better for you that you did, even though you didn't. Go on."

Sophie easily slides into her normal back and forth with Braon. This isn't really anything new.

"Once again you assume a lot about what I think or what I'm about to say. But you're a lot quicker to judge me for my alleged lack of caution than I am to judge your sexual morals. Which I've never done, to my recollection."

"Out loud." Braon interjects. "It's right there between the lines at all times. Or are you about to explain to me why it's perfectly fine for me to go have a drunken fling at Trog's, but you wouldn't do it yourself? Hm?" She frowns. "Why is it right for me and not for you? Why would you beat yourself up over it but not care if it was me?" She makes a gesture, drawing a line from her chest to Sophie's. "Some sort of... fundamental difference between us, hm? You better than me, I'm better than you?"

"Yes." Braon says with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever. "...And don't go acting all surprised about it. This isn't the first time I've said as much. And it's not the first time you've implicitly denied it, either." She rolls her spoon around in her stew for a moment, her expression softening ever so slightly after a moment.

"...I wouldn't take it personally if I were you." She adds, her tone softening into what could almsot be considered a croon. "I see everyone that way... more or less. It's extremely rare for anyone to prove me wrong on that front. And besides... I don't hate you for it." She takes a couple of jabs at her stew with her spoon and lifts it to her mouth, blowing on it to cool it off.

"Wow, we're rich!" Lucy exclames, but it doesn't take long for her to realize her error. That's a fun discovery, though, punctuated with a mouth full of chocolate.

She's only partially done chewing on that chocolate when she voices her opinion on the other items. "Wow these are neat." Her hands pass over them, moving the geode to catch the light, briefly looking at her reflection in the spoon, turning the hourglass over, and finally picking up the bell to give it a little shake. Is she going to get around to laying claim on any of these?

"So you judge people just as you believe they judge you. Preemptively evening the score." Sophie's disappointment is gone, or at least hidden. "What?" Braon raises an eyebrow. "Me, judgemental? Hardly. I just get sick of all the hypocrisy. People acting like they'rein a position to judge me. Like they're spotless. Again, I'm rarely wrong about people looking at me like... like I'm just trash. I know it's coming the whole time. So why not fire back with how two-faced they're being? Tell them exactly to stick it when they talk down to me like that."

Braon shrugs. "Might not get through to them very often, but at least it makes me feel better."

[Treasure Hunting]

The kitten Manja takes advantage of the apparent warmth of Khannie's hand, and yawns, and closes her eyes.

Of course, Manja knows that all the treasure belongs to her. However, she also recognizes that as both Shadow Mistress and the ruler of these lands, she has to be gracious and generous.

She paws at her treasure hunter helmet, trying to take it off so that she can curl up more comfortably.

Where was she? she asks herself. Ah, yes, Manja was praising herself about how affable and munificent she is. And to demonstrate her munificence, she decides she'll allow all three of her minions get first pick through the treasure, and she'll only take for herself whatever remains.

And, no, it's not because she's tired, she swears. (Although, if pressed, she would admit that she is just a little tired. Not that it matters, of course. It's just that princesses have a lot of duties and one of the duties was watching over all three of the other kids and making sure they were safe! In fact, Khannie ought to be thanking Manja for allowing her to hold her!)

[Treasure Hunting]

"Holy HECK this stuff is all really cool looking!" Khannie says, grinning like a great big dork as she leans over the treasure chest. It takes a little effort since she's holding Manja, but she leans over the chest and nabs one of the coins for herself.

She will never say no to chocolate.

NEVER!

All these trinkets look kind of strange and whimsical, but that's how the last treasure trove was too. All of it was special, somehow. Not in like... dungeon look for slaying monsters sorta special, though. Just like cool special. Like cool toys, basically.

Oh now Manja is wriggling around a little. Khannie lets the illusionary treasure hunter helmet she had made for the kitty disperse since she's trying to take it off.

"We should take this back to camp," Khannie says, eyeing the chest. "It isn't THAT big. I bet if you two grab one side and I grab the other we can carry it. That way everyone else can see the cool treasure we found! And share some of the candy, too, we'll get sick if we eat it all."

Laying verbal claim to the mattock doesn't do anything, but it DOES continue to be an excellent looking digging tool.

And then Lucy begins touching things!

The geode is, of course, very pretty. It catches the light and sends rainbows dancing around the room like a ball full of prisms. That's pretty special and magical all on its own!

Making a silly face at the spoon doesn't do much aside from looking silly, but its polished surface makes for a clear if distorted reflection. There's something special about the spoon, though. If only Lucy had something to snack on with it she could find out what it is!

Turning over the hourglass makes her feel... focused! Like she could get things done without getting distracted! That might be really handy for doing homework.

And, finally, the little iron bell is given a jingle. It sounds VERY pretty. Not like what Lucy might expect a rusty old bell to sound like at all. A music of pristine clarity. At the sound the weird talking rat sort of... jitters? There's a briefly overwhelming smell of rotten blackberries as the rat goes POOF! and there's something else there that's a rat but also not. Also a bat. And some sort of tiny deer? All of those things at once with deep black fur and luminous golden eyes and teeth that glow like the silver of the crescent moon.

"UGH! What a gross sound mucking up my glamours like sharp things," the pooka laments, dancing back several steps. "I didn't know those were angel treasures I don't even WANT any of them anymore."

A spirit! The talking rat was some sort of spirit!

A spirit living in the cave, maybe?

Khannie, meanwhile, looks pretty surprised when her Human Girl Illusion sputters briefly, revealing the white fox spirit under it. She makes some alarmed fox noises in response to this which sound pretty funny. Incidentally, this makes her pretend treasure hunter helmets burst like little bubbles of iridescent shadow.

[Treasure Hunting]

"You're a spirit! I knew it!" Tuskfang points his new mattock at the no-longer-rat accusingly. "Are these angel treasures like Zabb and Lapis are angels?" Then he turns to look at Khannie. "Khannie, why are you a fox?"

"...Well... um..." Braon brushes her hair out of her face as she stammers together a response. "...This is going to sound a bit indulgent, but... none of the little ones in the other room see me that way. I don't think so, at least. They're too young for that." She shrugs and concedes, "Granted, what they do see is a smiling face and a pair of tits, but honestly, that's still an improvement." She jabs at her stew for a moment, before adding, "Then again, I never really saw them as seeing me as trash, so it's not like they proved me wrong, exactly, is it? I suppose that leaves..."

Um.

"...Well, it's happened before." She says evasively, not entirely comfortable with bringing up Fayyaad to Sophie. "But extremely rarely. Not the norm by any means. Are you going somewhere with this?"

Sophie's mind runs down various possibilities in a flash. It's something she's always done, but as a Solar it's... greater. Like she sees connections between people laid out in a clear map. It's sometimes disconcerting. So easy to just see them as pawns on a chessboard...

She remembers a man who visited GLoG. A tiefling named Fayyaad. He visited Braon while she was pregnant and she seems to have sent him something later, more than once. The father of her children? Unlikely. Only one of them is a fiendling like Braon and none of them is a tiefling. Besides, he would have visited already if that was the case. Still, it's most likely him who got through to Braon.

"I'm trying to understand and help you, Braon. And that means understanding your deep distrust of those around you. But if you'd rather not go into details, I won't push."

"I don't see what's so hard to understand about it." Braon mutters, that all-too-familiar growl of frustration burning in the back of her throat. "I don't trust people because I shouldn't trust them. Are you going to look me in the eye and tell me that no, most people here aren't going to judge me for who and what I am, apropos of nothing?" She makes a sweeping gesture with her hand. "That ship has sailed, brought back spices, and been torched in the harbor. Do you know what the kids around here call me? Have you heard?" She draws her hands over her face, stretching her features droopily. "They call me a hag. A hag. I know I've let myself go a little while I was pregnant, but Adea's sake, I haven't hit thirty winters yet. You know they call me that just to spite me. And the adults? To my knowledge, they don't exactly discourage it. They just focus more on 'oh, she's a problem' than on the age part. Are you going to tell me with a straight face that, in that situation, distrust is an inappropriate response?"

[Treasure Hunting]

The treasure hunter helmet came of remarkably easily1 Manja's glad for that.

She does find it a little hard to nap, though.
First! There's that irritating bell sound! Ugh, it's really irritatingly beautiful! And just regular irritating, too! It needs to stop! Plus, the awful smell of weird gross berries gone bad, and then it makes Khannie's hand suddenly feel weird and less warm! And, even worse, it all happens at the same time!

Yeah, Manja decides it's an irritating bell. Makes it hard to rest.

The kitten looks down from Khannie's hand, and decides she's going to bail if a chance comes up. If the ground gets close enough. She looks, and waits, and if an appropriate time comes, tries to hop back down to the ground. It's probably about time to leave this cave, anyway, she thinks. Especially with that rotten berry smell.
The kitten looks annoyed at the pooka for smelling so weird.
And then, (if she did manage to get down!) crosses back over the rainbow bridge, to lead the way back. Y'know, in case anybody gets lost on the way back, she can lead the way and make sure no more rats show up.
