[Mouchabière Residence]

A great battle unfolds in the memory. The airship is accompanied by more, crewed by Exalted and mortals alike. They fight hordes of terrible demons as they push on. Finally they reach what seems to be the heart of the frightful forest - a figure resembling an amalgamation of hands, with several eyes glowing balefully.

Sophie puts her arm around Trick's waist and squeezes. She knows that Trick has some very bad memories connected to the Far Realm.

"I think this is one of those 'pillars of the earth' I remembered. Some... titanic beings that the Exalted fought."

"Ugh, why am I the one freaking out?" Trick asks as she leans against Sophie, tension clear in her frame, "I'm the one that survived those monsters, but here you are comforting me."

The tiefling lets out a sigh, straightens up, and Sophie will hear something in her tone that might bring to mind a soldier - a hardness from her adventuring days, "Alright, focusing. This looks like a living landscape. Those kinds of creatures almost always have a centralized core they spread out. They're cutting of its ability to escape and then pulling up the core by the roots so it can be killed, I think. Non-human origin, clearly, and if it's called a 'Pillar of the Earth' then that means it's part of the underlying foundations of the world."

She regards it a moment longer, before nodding to herself, "... Look at the way it's structured - it's not having energy flow via blood vessels and the like unless that's all underground, but I'd bet money that its body is energy based, metaphysical links instead of physical. I don't know how you'd kill something like that without a lot of ritual prep, and I wouldn't be able to do something like that on a moving airship. So they're either doing a desperate charge, or they've got magic like I've never see before."

"That'd get me expelled. And then sent to superhell, which is probably run by her mother." So all in all, a bad idea.

But then the booming voice! Urgabash snarls and stands up, striding towards the door- which bangs open before he gets there, with nobody visible opening it (because Aigothurz can't see ghosts, and has inadvertently altered Urgabash enough that his abilities and knowledge aren't accurate). He's followed by Aigothurz, hand on the hatchet at his waist, whilst Silverleaf helps her wife up and will escort her to the door, aided by the eight-year-old I forgot to introduce. Others will also show up; a younger quarter-human orc, holding a double-ended spear and the hand of a male human with no clothes on, who is also holding a spear. A pair of four-year-olds clutching wooden swords. A very short orcling with silver hair, a few years younger than Aigothurz and swinging a bolas. A frail and quite old one-eyed half-orc leaning on a walking stick and holding a goat horn to his ear. A halfling man with a spikey silver hair in multicoloured robes and lots of jewellery, riding a pygmy camel.

Ultimately, however, the whole tribe's united by bonds of blood and loyalty; these are simply the ones related closest to Urgabash in various ways.
[Bloodplunder House - Not Nana's]

Aikobaz watches them assemble without comment, up until Aigothurz attempt to go out and join them, at which point she attempts to stop him by putting a hand on his shoulder. "...Please don't go out there." The empress says quietly. "I would... I would not have you see what is to follow."

If Aigothurz ignores her warning and goes out to join his family, he will find that the voice belongs to none other than a very angry-looking young girl, no more than eight or nine years old, with telltale green skin and glowing orange veins. She's flanked on either side by about a half-dozen men in Napoleonic uniforms, each armed with antique muskets. A paltry force for confronting the full might of the extended Bloodplunder tribe, even if most of them weren't much older or larger than the child empress herself.

But, as Aigothurz might have already guessed, she wasn't really planning on clearing this confrontation through sheer force of arms.

"...You're Urgabash?" The girl sneers, looking up at the quarter-orc skeptically. "I was expecting someone... larger. Ah, no matter." She waves her hand dismissively. "Is this all you can muster? Is this what's left after your cowardly attack on Knidlign?" The girl steps forward and demands, fists clenched at her sides.

Bloodplunder House- Not Nana's

"I am Urgabash Who Listens to Lightning, son of Thruggid Longaxe, son of Aigothurz the Conqueror of the Bloodplunder clan. I am as large as the sky and as small as you see me here. Your guns do not frighten me. And I have never heard of the place you claim to represent, nor have we attacked a city in sixty years. The clans are too divided for any attempt at such to end in anything but failure, and we know it. You are mistaken in your accusation, please leave." The sky, once calm, begins to fill with black storm clouds, though it's not raining yet. The three-quarter-orc's eyes begin to glow, the harsh flash of lightning yet to strike reflected in them.

Aigothurz will frown at Aikobaz, and lean over to whisper in her ear. "What's going on? Is this an enemy whose head I should gift you?"

"...You're not serious, are you?" Aikobaz whispers back. "She's nine. And more importantly, she's m-"

"DO NOT LIE TO ME!" The girl snaps, her voice booming through the tents with enough force to leave the poles rattling. "Knidlign was razed to the ground not three days ago! The survivors, what few of them were left, said it was the work of barbarians! And when I come here to see for myself, what do I find but just that?" The girl crosses her arms and gives Urgabash what is clearly supposed to be an imperious glare, but comes across more as a comically angry pout. "Did you think nobody was watching? That nobody would care if you just helped yourself to a little hamlet out in the middle of nowhere? No! These people are a part of my domain! They fall under my protection! And for your crimes, I will punish you!"

The girl raises her hand and forcefully points at Urgabash, a look of bloodthirsty rage streaking across her face. "Yazoto!" She intones, in a much lower voice. If nothing gets between Urgabash and her, and Aigothurz does not imagine him with any magical protection, all those present will soon find the chief gone, replaced by a confused-looking mallard.

"You are looking at the wrong 'barbarians'. We would not have left survivors." Urgabash closes his eyes as Baby Aikobaz intones her spell, and a bolt of lightning streaks from the sky. Urgabash isn't turned into a duck, though Aikobaz will be struck by the lightning bolt. It's hard to say which Aikobaz, however. "Leave, before I get angry. Or tour my camp, see for yourself that we do not have anything from this... Niddle Ligne. We did not attack you."

Inside the yurt, Aigothurz nods in understanding. "Ah. Thought it was a sibling, a rival to the throne. One younger but with what she thinks is a stronger claim." Half-sibling, most likely, though Aigothurz doesn't know if that's entirely accurate due to different cultures. His half-siblings would be produced by a recognised marriage, not bastard offspring.

"I didn't have to face anything like it, which is why it doesn't affect me the same way," Sophie points out. "Let's see how they deal with it..."

As they speak, someone jumps off the airship towards the figure that Trick identified as the centre. He's wielding an orichalcum dagger and small shield and seems to glide effortlessly through the air, followed by a corona of blazing sunlight. He clashes with the creature and buries his dagger in it time and again - his blows tearing through its very essence, sending the entire hand-forest screaming in pain.

► SHOW SPOILER
[Uninvited]

Stasia swallows. Okay, this was... about what she expected. People aren't freaking out too much either yet, so whatever Siana said can't have been that bad, right? She steps back to sit on her parent's bed. "Um, yeah - there was... a lot that happened last night. I guess, um, things technically started yesterday afternoon. I was walking home from Eliseo's, and when I put my hand in my pocket for something, I found a rock with an invitation to a party at midnight in Moth Park."

Glancing quickly to her moms, she adds, as if needing to defend herself, "I thought it was weird, so like, I just... threw it away, y'know? But it wasn't addressed to me, so- I kinda um, forgot about it by the time I got home. And I thought that would be that, but- then when I went to sleep, I woke up in Moth Park, wearing the dress you found me in."

"I thought it was a dream at first - it was all really foggy, and I went to the big tree in the center. They... something led me, I think?" There's a wrinkling of the brow, like it's hard to recall exact details. "I fell down a hollow into a really fancy waiting room. There was a woman waiting for me there. I- I think she said the host was, um, worried that I wouldn't arrive?"

"After that... I met the other guests," Stasia continues. "Siana was there, and- and that's why you found her at the tree with me. There were three others too, um - the General from Southside, a-a really creepy spirit called the King in Rags, and-" at this point she shivers, suddenly a little queasy "-I-Ilpholin Xar'cha."
"Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?"

The much-younger empress lets out a surprised yelp as the lightning bolt comes down at her, though thankfully she seems to be warded well enough that she is not, in fact, fried on the spot, as one who had been struck by lightning reasonably would be. Instead, she simply falls flat on her backside, looking mildly dazed and more than a little surprised that Urgabash resisted her magic; nobody is supposed to be able to do that.

More than once.

The young empress scowls and rises back to her feet. Aigothurz might recognize the look on her face... whether Urgabash had carried out an attack on her people was now irrelevant. He'd successfully wounded her pride. And there was only one way she could respond to that.

"At the ready!" The empress commands, as her soldiers raise their muskets into position.

Meanwhile, the present Aikobaz sighs and shakes her head. "...My apologies, Aigothurz. I swear, this is not how a meeting with the rest of your family would go."

"Your magic can't harm me. What makes you think twelve guns are different?" Urgabash is actually vulnerable; his blessing only protects him from harmful magic, not combat. Nevertheless, it's quite clearly a threat, and his family react appropriately. His halfling father-in-law upon the pygmy camel produces a pistol of his own, a double-barrelled device of polished bone and brass. He'll fire it, re-cock it, rotate the barrels, and fire it again. The two spear-holders roar and charge, the human heedless of his nudity in his visible... excitement. The silver-haired orcling swings the bolas and releases it aimed at the neck of another redcoat. The eight-year-old grabs the younger children who try to charge off and hustles them over to Aigothurz' mother and Silvy, who quickly try to get them away. Whilst his family rise in his defence, Urgabash remains still, though even his frail father has replaced his ear-horn with a dagger and is stumbling to attack.

"Don't worry- I know. You aren't usually followed by your over-excited past self... Though you were pretty cute as a child." Aigothurz grins at the last, trying to tease Aikobaz so she's hopefully distracted as well. Whatever happens next, it won't be pretty for either of them.

"Of course. We've come this far and learned a lot. Might as well dig a little deeper." Sophie takes Trick's hand again and leaves the memory. They set off again, reaching what seems like the edge of the soul-scape. The clouds dim here and there's an indistinct, empty darkness beyond.

A lone memory sits here, of a group of people speaking to a towering, bright figure with four arms. They hold a spear, a shield, a horn and an olive branch.

"...that's him." Sophie speaks with certainty. She knows this without question. "It's the Unconquered Sun. Speaking to his chosen personally."

Trick hugs her tight, and it takes a long moment for Trick to look away from the god, her face blushing a darker red than a moment before, "... Wow. He seems... powerful."

How very diplomatic for the woman that was just staring at his pecs and biceps. Here is this scene of numinous power and her first thought is how muscular he was.

Still giggling, Sophie steps closer to the memory. She reaches out and it becomes more clear. At least twenty people of all shapes and sizes are listening to the Unconquered Sun. The bearer of Sophie's Exaltation, possibly the very first one, is a man again - this time a bronze-skinned, weather-beaten man with a beard and a mess of hair.

"-and together we will cast down the tyrants who rule Creation. The titans. They care nothing for you and will sweep humanity off the face of their world if it pleases them or they grow bored with you. You have no power to face them, but now, with our might empowering you, there are precious few limits left for you."

"Bit of a political speech there," It's moving, the power that thrums in his voice, but Trick is attempting to maintain her distance from that. Really, it seems like he's being honest and eager, even if Trick can see how he's using humanity as pawns, "He really sells it, though."

Part of it might be that jawline, but her observation still has merit.

"It seems to answer our driving question, too." Sophie is also looking at the Unconquered Sun, but her feelings are different than Trick's. There's a strange, ambivalent feeling to it. This is her patron deity, but one who didn't deign to talk to her like he is doing to these first Solars. She can't feel a personal connection to him. "It's... how can I not like him if I don't know him?" Sophie breathes out. This is the kind of honesty she usually practices only around Trick. "I never met him. If it wasn't for Corvus and having known Shrike back in the day, I wouldn't even know his name. He just imbued me with his powers, like that. Second time someone chose me as a vessel without asking. Though at least his power isn't more of a curse than a blessing. It wasn't so clear with the Messengers."

Trick Kisses her cheek, and runs a hand through her hair, "I think you shouldn't treat him like a patron god, then. Treat him... more like a..." she considers for a moment, looking out at the scene before them, "...a blacksmith. You own a really nice weapon the blacksmith made, but that doesn't mean you need to give any more reverence for the blacksmith than you would give to the maker of a sword. It could be a very nice sword, but it's not his, it's yours."

A little imperfect on Trick's part, admittedly, but she thinks that got the point across.

"I was a right little terror." Aikobaz corrects, as the scene melts around them, with neither of them paying any particular attention to what was happening. "That was somewhat typical of me. Back in the early days of my rule, while there still were barb- nomads around the edges of the Empire's territories." Her cheeks flush a light orange as she steps forward, a crystal floor forming beneath them. "I thought, back then, that was what it meant to be a strong ruler. If someone attacks my people, I should strike back, harder and more decisively. And for a time, it worked... though not as well as it possibly could have. I developed something of a reputation for aggression. By the time I was thirteen, I'd dragged the Astral Empire into war with three of our neighbors. Eleven if you count individual nations instead of alliances. The fact that we were winning said war didn't change the fact that it was hard on the citizenry." She grimaces. "...Diplomacy has never been my forte."

"You say that like it's impossible to be both a cute child and a right little terror." Although Aikobaz was likely protesting the 'over-excited' descriptor. "'Barbarian' originally meant 'foreigner'. As the city-dwellers developed and monopolised their resources to grow, denying them to nomads, it became a pejorative. It is... almost good that you ended up here, with PREP. They have lessons on diplomacy and politics, and I take both. Some of the texts are... interesting. A Lady Aisha explained her liege's take on diplomacy as taking a bottle of cheap wine and a sword with her and explaining that despite how foul the wine was, it was at least better than getting stabbed." Aigothurz pauses. "Which at least implies Lady Aisha had never drunk wine from Ecbatana, as I genuinely would prefer getting stabbed to drinking more of it."

Aikobaz lets out an amused snort, quickly covering her mouth in embarrassment. "...Sorry." She grimaces, still maintaining an orange glow in her cheeks. "...You might remember I'm in both of those classes, too. I do all right in politics, but in diplomacy, I, um..."

A cascade of papers appears around them, most of them labeled with big, red Fs and various permutations of "see me after class".

"...As I said. Not my forte." The empress grimaces. "I prefer Machiavelli's take on the subject, but even then, I seem to be missing the mark. I'm... not normally the sort of person who gets along well with others. As I'm sure you've noticed." She gives Aigothurz a little shrug. "...Present company excluded."
Who're you? ...Don't matter.

Bloodplunder House- Not Nana's

"You might do better if you woke up. I know you're doing this, and it's useful, but... you've slept through three group practical lessons. Diplomacy's all about interacting with groups, and you're sleeping through the chance to interact with groups." It's ultimately up to Aikobaz if she sleeps or attends a given lesson, but it does seem slightly counterproductive to dream a lesson on diplomacy without actually practicing diplomacy with other students. "How many of our classmates do you even know, actually? Your social life is... It seems to be suffering a little." Although Aigothurz already gave some advice on that, on how to treat other people. Yet to see if it works.

You own a really nice weapon the blacksmith made, but that doesn't mean you need to give any more reverence for the blacksmith than you would give to the maker of a sword. A little imperfect on Trick's part, admittedly, but she thinks that got the point across.
Sophie rests her head on Trick's shoulder.
