The Scorching Depths is a hell in a period of gradual upheaval. The old queen, Sapphira, has died, and her daughter, Sekhmet, has taken the throne with rather different views of how a demonic kingdom should be run. Her subjects are split over what to think.
And despite this, she still receives frequent visitors, ranging from her friends and earthly advisors to those unfortunate enough to inadvertently stumble into her kingdom.
This place is hot, literally. A volcanic landscape under a sunless sky. Fields of ash and mountains of dark, igneous rock are cut by rivers of molten lava, which provide the only light in this forsaken place. The souls of the damned float through the magma rivers and lie buried under the ashen flats, eternally catatonic in agony.
The denizens of this place are also hot. Succubi and Incubi, souls twisted into manifestations of desire by the will of Sapphira, form the majority of the population. Sekhmet tries to keep their urges in check, or at least out of sight.
There are only a few places of note in the Depths. More may come as the need arises.
► Locations
The City of Pandemonium:
The royal palace of the Depths is a single building the size of a city. Most of it was abandoned over the course of Sapphira's rule, as she drove out the residents through cruelty. Currently, it is under remodeling as Sekhmet cleans up unsightly things like torture chambers and starts repairing the ruined sections.
Practically any service imaginable (so long as it doesn't deal with advanced technology) can be obtained somewhere in Pandemonium. Additionally, the palace houses hundreds of demons, and has the capacity for thousands more.
The Brimstone Park Portal:
This secret location is kept under strict guard. The portal is located beneath a lava river in a canyon. It opens into the lava pool in Brimstone Park in Inside. On this side of the portal, it is the site of Sekhmet's secret rehabilitation program for damned souls, presided over by her Captain of the Guard, Rose (played by Rebonack).
Old Ruins:
The Depths are dotted with ruins dating back millennia, built by independent demons who wanted to live free of Sapphira's rule. They were, almost universally, hunted down and enslaved or destroyed.
Destroyed Foundries:
Sapphira had four foundries built to process damned souls into power-boosting Essence. Fueled by the slave labor of hundreds of demons, they were the basis of the economy of the Depths. Sekhmet ordered all four shut down and sabotaged so that they would not be used again, but three of the structures still stand.
Many types of demons dwell here. The Depths is the fate of those who bring corruption in their mortal lives.
► Denizens
Succubi and Incubi:
Sapphira's favored subgroup, succubi and incubi are demons associated with lust and jealousy. Appearing as attractive humanoids, they are capable of shapeshifting at will and manipulating minds, and often have picked up other talents over their centuries of life. Their tails contain a corruptive and mind-altering venom that is useful in certain alchemical concoctions. Due to an intentional flaw introduced by Sapphira, they cannot shapeshift into someone of the opposite sex from their true self, and they must curtain regularly to avoid growing weak and eventually decaying into nothingness. Unlike the other kinds of demons in the Depths, succubi and incubi come from all walks of life, as they are the deceased that Sapphira found interesting, or who had sold their souls to another succubus or incubus.
Guards:
The demonic guards resemble humans in heavy and obscuring black plate armor. They're telepathically connected to each other and are instilled with unwavering loyalty to their queen. They are capable of seeing through most illusions and detecting when they are lied to. They are highly resistant to all forms of magic.
The guards are those who in life took bribes or otherwise looked the other way, and so allowed evil to overcome them, and so they are punished with eternal vigilance.
Hellhounds:
Every hellhound is a unique monster, a colossal beast of incredible brute strength and viciousness. Generally around the size of a rhinoceros, hellhounds boast a variety of natural and magical weapons with which to brutalize their prey. Each hellhound is also as intelligent as a person, a fact that few have time to appreciate when faced with one.
In life, hellhounds were people so monstrous that in death, their fate is to take the form of a beast, all vestiges of humanity stripped from them. There is no mercy in a hellhound's heart.
Hellbirds:
Demonic messengers and common familiars, hellbirds come in all shapes and sizes, much like their canine cousins. Unlike hellhounds, however, hellbirds are clearly intelligent and diplomatic in disposition. They have little actual power.
Hellbirds were gossips, spies, and social engineers in life. Their fate is eternal servitude as messengers, couriers and as the queen's eyes and ears.
Lesser Demons:
In addition to these specific punishments, some demons arise who do not belong to any category. Occasionally a powerful and willful damned soul spontaneously evolves into a demon. As a result these creatures have little in common with each other, but are usually adapted to consuming other damned souls and the occasional unwary greater demon.
