[Black Abyss Milk Factory Wreck]

"I'm fine," Dorota says, getting to her feet unsteadily. Physically, she's indeed fine. Mentally, she's very rattled. "I just want to go home."

[Raindrop District Hospital]

"Hold on, Rose. Just hold on." Fayyaad's carpet will take off, carrying him and Rose to the Raindrop district, where he hopes to find the hospital Mina mentioned.

[Groundtown]

"I hit it!" Olvisin calls out as she ducks some debris. "We can follow the blood trail now!"

Luuvat has no time for anything elaborate and casting at range is more difficult. He raises his staff and causes jagged pieces of metal to fall in the creature's path. Hopefully they will injure it more and slow it down.

[Ruins of Trust-Worthy Hotel]

Leftover spores from Lia's efforts pose more danger to Sandels than the struggles of the disintegrating Kylder body. When he notices one of its arms going limp while the other keeps moving, the Reaper catches the kylder's right hand with his left and squuezes it hard to break its physical form. Soon, what's left it Trust's naked spirit wrestling with the Reaper, with the Reaper holding him by the wrists.

"Give up", Sandels snarls through clenched teeth, "you are done, Phineas. From here, all paths go through me. You want to dodge the big fire below? Then submit! This is the last offer!"

Ruins of Trust-Worthy Hotel

All that's left after the body dissolves is the spectral image of an obese man, grotesquely distorted and fatter than he ever was in life, made entirely from shadows, darkness, and the thick goo that was the kylder's blood. "No. Leave, flee, and you may have a chance. My chosen vessel was inferior, but now I am free there are other tricks I can use." The spectre opens its mouth inhumanly wide, white teeth glinting in a very... solid manner, and with that Phineas Trust- or whatever it has become- tries to bite off Sandals' head.

Groundtown

Sian whoops at the news Olvisin delivers, though can't do much more than follow the goblin's lead so long as their quarry remains in the dark. She doesn't loose the flare, though, since it might attract attention from elsewhere in the city and so long as the blood remains somebody can follow it.

Tempest Row Nearly-Free Clinic For The Gainfully Employed

It's a small place, really, this clinic. Got a single ward of beds, a couple of medical scanning devices and four doctors of average skill, and two large bouncers with heavy clubs and second-hand body armour. The prices are reasonably cheap, subsidised by a larger and more advanced hospital in the Cloudtops that didn't want to be clogged with petty shopkeepers, publicans, and floor managers. Most of the true labourers in Skyside's industrial areas can't afford even these prices, not without selling a kidney or two (although if they're healthy enough, that is a valid payment option).

When Fayyaad and Rose swoop in the doctors cease what they were doing and get her into a bed and start to work doing... medically things. They'll treat the burns, remove as much metal as they safely can, inject some First Responder nanites that will restart her heart if it stops and send out a runner to the nearest temple.

[Tempest Row Clinic]

Rose has been slipping in and out of consciousness throughout the entire trip, but once she gets to the clinic, her eyes are never further than half-closed. There's nothing about this place that doesn't set her on edge, especially so once the treatments start.

Admittedly, the bed isn't half-bad. But since pods are more the medical unit of choice in her era, laying down in one for treatment is sort of... surreal. And the thread count could be a little higher... what is this stuff, burlap?

Everything past that point, though, is a medical nightmare. What on earth are they doing with her burns? Ugh, they're actually removing dead tissue. So wasteful. And now they're... going in with forceps to pull shrapnel out of her? And hey hold on what's in that syringe keep that the hell away from-

Oh. It's nanites. Finally, some actual medicine. Probably still plenty primitive, though. She'll have to make sure they're not going to be anything incompatible with her medgel when Olvisin gets here.

As soon as there's room, Rose's hand reaches out in the direction she expects Fayyaad to be in, but she can't see well enough to tell if the doctors let him into the ward or not. Here's hoping he's still around...

Lia gasps in horror at the sight of the grotesque spirit. She wracks her head desperately for anything that could help, but against such a terrible foe, she has no tricks left to pull.

Unless she could use her spores to boost Sandels directly? She's never done anything like that before, but the principle is sound. She raises her arms, yellow spore dust coalescing around them- and then Phineas Trust attacks, jaws snapping towards Sandels' head. There's no way she can reach him before that happens, so his survival is in his own bandaged hands.

"Ah- yes. It would also draw a lot of attention and... so on." She hastily tries to justify the fact that she didn't have a flying vehicle or device. Since that had been a point of contention between her and her father until she realized not only the practical limitations of carrying around the devices they had to offer but the fact they would provoke a slew of unwanted questions like where she even got such a device from. It Utayo's world such technology was probably just plain better and wouldn't stand out at all...

Ambrosia had never felt so ashamed of coming from a low-technological world.
So she's quite relived when Utayo changes the subject.

"Truly?" She can't help but to remark when the moonfolk mentions that she not only had an interest in origami too but that it was used to develop technology in her world. Made her feel less like a savage if only by association.

So of course she would help in this development process. She might not be technologically advanced but she was still one of the greatest flying beings around, wasn't she? "Oh, of course I'll help in a fellow scholars endeavors. What do you need me to do?" She couldn't help but to hold her her head high, as Utayo was rubbing just the right spot of her pride.

Everything after Trust's "no" is just noise to the Reaper. He resists the urge to sigh, he has no time for that. Instead, he breathes in and intones one last spell:

"Path of Destruction: Crimson Flame Cannon!"

When Trust opens his mouth wide, so does Sandels - but rather than sharp teeth, the Reaper's mouth is filled with red hot flames, which he breathes directly down Trust's swollen throat. The flames are of the same nature as the bullets Sandels once used to shoot off Trust's leg and arms - meaning, they burn the material, and annihilate spirits.

It's time to see if Trust's run from the fire has come to its end.

There's an echoing, unearthly shriek as Sandals vomits hellfire down the ghost's gaping gullet, Trust's shadowy exterior starting to crack, a spiderweb of glowing lines racing across the wraith before Phineas explodes, a burst of light and shadow and cold washing the room before dissipating. Trust is gone; not present, sent to whatever afterlife he deserved or perhaps simply obliterated and permanently destroyed.

A few maggots from the kylder are still crawling around, though not many. Seeking the darkest places they can, burrowing into the piles of ash and spilling down the stairs.

In fact, I have my own sketches that I could share with you too. Since I've managed to sketch not only dragons but various other extraordinary beings as well." A beat. Tempest Row Clinic

The nanites course through Rose's veins, fixing any organ damage they can and replenishing her blood. They aren't advanced enough to fix the burns, or sophisticated to know how to repair any non-vital system, and one of the nurses- a bald chap in scrubs with the Triforce tattooed on his forehead- is holding an old iPad and taps commands into it occasionally to keep them on track, occasionally reporting their findings on her internals to the doctors. The priest is a minute away, so a wait but not as far as Olvisin has to travel (I think), a heavily-built halfling with three chins, waddling forward in white robes stained with various sauces, a tall mitre on his head helping people avoid him in the busy room. He's quickly swaddled in scrubs and overshoes, to try and prevent contamination. There's a clock built into his mitre, and several expensive watches on his wrists. "Great Lexor, give us the Time to heal this poor... person of their grievous injuries, and bless them with reliability and mechanical fortitude in their future to prevent further calamity hitting this poor, benighted soul." He reaches out to touch Rose's foot, and healing energy swirls from his grasp into her body, where... it will help. He's not the best cleric, as may be obvious, but it will at least prevent infection and speed her healing.

"Neither am I." Ambrosia muses. "But I make it work." She starts looking around the room. "So is this the largest room in the apartment? Since I think me being able to stretch out my wings would help."

Getting up, gently bouncing Ugi, she starts looking around. "Maybe if I stood here..."
It takes a little bit as the more Ambrosia sees the more disappointed she is of its size. Finally, she seems to resign herself however. "Suppose I could curl up a bit..."

She sits down, crosses her legs and gently places Ugi in-between them. "Just give me a bit." She gently bops Ugi's nose. "And you stay put there little guy."
Ambrosia then closes her eyes and starts meditating.

But after a few minutes tragedy strikes.

Ugi starts to bawl and Ambrosia is completely unresponsive to it.

"Um." Utayo's eyes widen and she looks back to Ugi. "Oh, what do I..." The woman carefully scoops up the bundled up child. She's going to have to get used to this. It's not that many more months until she'll have her own... "There there, no need to cry." She tries to assure, moving in an uncertain bobbing motion. Is there perhaps something she's missing?

Ugi seems inconsolable and only seems to cry louder after he's taken from his mothers hands. Perhaps he's hungry?
Which does beg the question what Ambrosia feeds him. Since she can't be breastfeeding the infant.

"I'm here, I'm here." A familiar yet unfamiliar voice calls out as the head of the dragon comes into view. The rest of her serpentine body soon being seen coming up behind her. "I'm so sorry, this usually doesn't happen. Would you mind putting him down on the floor?"

If Utayo does so the dragon will start to curl up around him which does seem to sooth him. "There, there, I'm here now, Ugi. I'm here now." Ambrosia declares as she gently rubs her snout against the child who does eventually stop crying.
She turns to look at the moonfolk. "Thank's for trying to help. He can be difficult to calm down at times. Perhaps I shouldn't have brought him here."

"You...you did it!" she yells triumphantly, pumping a fist into the air. She walks over to Sandels, intentionally crushing any of the maggots in her way.

"Are you okay? That thing was really tearing into you there. Who was he anyway?" Lia still has no idea who Trust was, or why they were hunting him. It clearly had something to do with the hotel, but beyond that things are murky.

"Well, Ugi is also not quite what he appears. Since I believe most children would at least be as startled as you were when I appear, Utayo." Ambrosia remarks as she looks down at her child. "Yet you cry more when I leave even for just a few moments, don't you?" Her mouth open and a vaguely serpentine tongue emerges which licks the top of the infants head. A gesture he seems delighted by.

Her head turns up so her red reptilian eyes can meet Utayo's gaze again. At this point she might become aware of the scent of ozone which always seemed to follow Ambrosia around, but it was especially strong while she was a dragon. "Anyway... I believe you wanted to sketch me?" She stretched out her wings in a way which might accidentally knock over something.

[Ruins of Trust-Worthy Hotel]

Sandels shakes off any maggots that might linger on his body. He doesn't go off his way to crush them - kyldren might be horrifying on their own, but in absence of a controlling evil spirit, they are not his problem.

"... he was owner of this hotel", Sandels croaks with a dry throat, his voice only a whisper from what it was. Wisps of steam, or perhaps smoke, erupt from his mouth with every word. "... my last tag-along killed him, but as you saw, his spirit was not ready to go. I took my best shot at stopping him then, but it didn't take."

He hangs the, now blackened, silver pendant back on his neck and goes to lean against the nearest wall. "... I hoped to capture him and bind him to my will, but... well. He was a rotten man in his life. Death didn't make him any better. But now he got what was coming, and that's that... hurk... excuse me..."

Sandels bends over and vomits in the corner. He inhaled some lingering spores from Lia's attacks while he spoke to Trust. Not enough to be lethal, but enough to make him ill. His clothes are covered in kylder blood, burned and partially eaten away by Lia's spores. As she watches, his bandages move around and rebind themselves to cover damages caused by the fight.

Ruins of Trust-Worthy Hotel

Any surviving maggots, without someone deliberately seeking them out, will disappear into darkened corners and start to pupate.

Technically, Trust only owned half the hotel. Madame Worthy owned the other half.

The building is now probably deserted, or at least this bit of it is. Sandals could go investigate the possessed armour outside, or try to find the vampire that killed the escaped slave Lia's probably still carrying, or they could head into other parts of the building to see if there's any signs of what Trust was up to, besides eating dangerous spirits.

Oh, good. Whatever god this cleric was serving, they didn't hold any particular grudge against atheists. Good to know.

Unless this is when Rose finds out that he just gave her cancer or something. Wouldn't that be a kick in the head?

Meanwhile, Rose lets out a held breath as her condition steadily improves. She's not in any less pain than she was before, but at least she can breathe again. She's still not entirely sure what's going on with her vision, but that can be fixed in a pod when she gets back. For now... it looks as though she's going to pull through.

"Well, it sounds like he deserved whatever you did to him," says Lia, nodding, "Although I guess that leaves us back at square one with your spirit quest."

As Sandels vomits, Lia gives him a look of concern. Despite his supernatural resilience, the fight seems to have taken a lot out of him.

"Sorry about the spores, I don't like to use those ones because of how dangerous they are. Are you gonna be okay?" She looks down at her own arms and clicks her tongue. "It's lucky you finished him when you did, I didn't have a whole lot of fight left in me either." Indeed, the skin of her arms looks dry and desiccated, the result of using so many spores.

Her eyes settle on the impaled corpse that Sandels had laid to rest, and after draining herself during the fight she's hungrier than ever. "You mind if I...?" she gestures towards the body, face twitching a little.

"hurk... no need to be sorry... you did more good than harm here. If not for you... I might've wrestled with him all night. Worse, he might've escaped", Sandels rasps. After emptying his stomach, he slumps against the wall and sits on the ground, legs spread.

"Go ahead", he says when he notices Lia eyeing the impaled corpse, "It's not showing any signs of getting up on its own. Should be safe eating."

Sandels rests and waits for Lia go consume her meal. Then, he wrenches himself back up, spitting the last of smoke, spores and bile from his mouth.

"This trip isn't wasted yet. There's another presence nearby - spirit of an item. Let's go and see if that one's more open to negotiation."

He heads towards the exit. He keeps his eyes out for those goons, the explosion may have roused their attention.

Ruins of the Trust-Worthy Hotel

The goons are still outside, and not caring much for whatever's going on inside; if they heard it, they're ignoring it or didn't realise it was from so close. This being Skyside, gunshots aren't exactly uncommon as one gang takes on another or a masked vigilante hits a drug lab or whatever. The girl in biker leathers has disappeared, however, the twitchy half-elf holding the missing goon's still-smoking pipe. The astute might note a black-furred tail disappearing into one of the upper windows, as she goes to investigate. So the writhing-bearded cephalid remains, in his suit and holding his briefcase, as do the twitchy half-elf in the torn summer dress, holding a pipe she doesn't know what to do with and a cut-throat razor she very much does, the pallid human with the green mohawk and the old rifle, which he's now holding ready to bring up and fire. Perhaps the explosion alerted them more than they're trying to let on.

The final goon is the one in the rusty suit of armour with the very large sword, or perhaps they aren't. It's hard to tell just by looking that the armour's empty, especially since it does subconsciously seem to be a person... But there's nobody alive in there, just a ghost clinging on a century past its death and a tsukumogami born from the history of maintenance and care put into the armour to ensure it was still capable of defending its wearer's life, even if it hasn't truly been worn in generations.
