Springtime

So anyway, Sirius started blastin'.

No preamble, no declaration of justice. He just takes one look at that thing as the wave of existential terror washes over them and starts peppering the thing with little fireballs. Will it do anything? Probably not. Does he think any other option should be taken when it comes to dumptruck sized spiders? Also no.

Springtime

Agate joins Sirius, pulling her pistol from the folds of her dress and shooting it with one hand before recocking the weapon and shifting the magazine along to shoot again. The recoil, combined with the two-handed method of using this particular firearm, means before she knows it she's lost her balance, and now she's falling. This is, perhaps, less than ideal.

[Springtime]

The kumiho doesn't know a ton of stuff about mares and Dreamlands things.

But y'know what she DOES know?

She got snippets of stories from the Frescot things about the monster that came to their house that one time. And this definitely has the feeling of that. So Sirius and Agate have got the right idea. In like manner, the kumiho doesn't hesitate, springing from strand to strand and hauling back to deck the spider square in its face, her fist wreathed in bitter malice.

So!

The mare gets shot by fireballs! And a heroic song! And then punched square in the gob!

With a hiss the mare backpeddles, the spiritual attacks from the fox and the magic girl inflicting grievous wounds. The digital fire really doesn't help, either. Mares aren't accustomed to their prey fighting back, especially not with attacks that are particularly effective against them. Most any mortal weapon, save for cold iron, really can't harm them. But Agate's elemental weapon and the kumiho's hungry darkness most CERTAINLY can.

And good ol' fashioned fire is a symbol of purification.

Horrible spider demons definitely aren't pure.

"How DARE you!" roars the spider, its awful stringy hair growing longer and longer as it strikes out to entangle our heroes!

Agate thankfully doesn't have to worry too much about getting wrapped up like a fly in gross monster hair because she just fell into Marigold's dream glade.

Meanwhile!

Marigold looks up just in time for a dwarf to fall into her grove!

Exciting!

A new friend!

The encroaching presence of the Witch seems simultaneously attracted and repulsed by the arrival of the Magical Girl. It ceases to advance, but it seems to waver with tension and anticipation.

Springtime
Marigold jumps back as the dwarf falls and splats into the mud of her grove. "Huh? Where'd you come from, dwarf?" The gaiad looks familiar but it's hard to put a finger on it. Agate might not spend enough time around Mary to recognize her without her demonic features; especially when some of them have been replaced by deer ones. There are bright orange marigold blossoms in her thick, curly hair. She smiles joyfully and approaches closer. "I like making new friends. Do you wanna be my friend?"
You don't recognize her? Ugh, I have so much work to do. Do I start with our memories or our personality?
*Sigh*
Remembering our friends will be more useful right now. Hopefully they can cover for us being a helpless ditz.

"Is this your shoe?" Marigold asks Agate, holding out Khannie's dropped shoe. "No, you have two already. Whose shoe is this?"

Sirius has had enough of this. He pulls himself as far back as he can and JUMPS! at the spider, flexing his armored talons.
"Fif rush!
He swipes left and right with his talons, hoping he can do enough damage for Khannie to do something or escape. His own safety is not important!
Does CHROME DIGIZOID count as iron for fae? Who knows?

Autumn

Never take a shortcut through a park. Honestly just avoid shortcuts in general.
In this case, a college-age fellow with red hair and the build and stubby tusks that suggest orkish heritage was just trying to take a shortcut home through a little garden alley. He's seen it a hundred times. It's not even long enough to be unable to see the exit out the other side. Just munching a bag of nuts, 20 feet tops.
But you don't trust parks in Inside, and you don't trust places with apple trees in Spooktober. Because this definitely isn't an alley in Inside.
But where is here?

[Autumn]

Well, there are certainly lots of apple trees here. Some green, some red, some yellow, many a mix of two or more colors! They certainly smell nice, all those wonderful ripe apples. But that's just the most obvious feature. There are many other trees, too. Some have totally lost their leaves while others are afire with the colors of autumn. Pumpkin vines creep all over the forest floor, their big leaves already starting to turn brown. The pumpkins, though, there's something odd about them. Not a single one is carved, but somehow they all give the impression of leering faces.

A thick mist rolls along the ground. Mist, thicker still, hovers just above the treetops, leaving the sky utterly obscured.

Definitely right.

This isn't Inside anymore.

This is somewhere else completely different.

But!

Several oddities might stand out.

Like that fence post over there, the only obviously manufactured object in sight. There's a rope tied around it, dangling on the ground.
Then there's that still pond over there, covered in duckweed and waterwheel. Should he look in that direction he's see sudden movement, the weeds swirling.
A strange tree looms, warty and misshapen, with branches reminiscent of grasping claws. A pair of luminous golden eyes peer out of a hollow in its trunk.

Wow, this is pretty awful. Like someone tried to take Spooktober decorations to their absolute conclusion. But then probably put actual monsters leering from the shadows so it's less laughable and more. Well. Honestly what those decorations were originally going for before they became ubiquitous.

Okay. Fairy stuff. No names. No food. No gifts.
Our hero who will not be giving his name to ANYONE takes a pair of apples from the nearby tree. Not for eating. For chucking at the first thing that tries to mess with him. Hey it beats trying to punch a fairy.
Then on to the fence post. Maybe if he's lucky it'll be metal and he can take it with him in case he needs to club something. Not sure what the rope is, but it definitely beats going ANYWHERE where there's obviously something watching him.

Now armed with a pair of apples (they're both green, as it happens) our heroes investigates a post! The fence post, it turns out, is made of wood.

The rope is...

Made of rope.

Natural fibers, though. It isn't one of those nylon ropes or anything.

Also?

There's a turtle on top of the fence post.

This is, of course, a very mean thing to do to a turtle.

Well. Okay.
He can't take the fence post out while there's a turtle on it. Our hero attempts to gently lift the turtle and place it down on the ground.
"There you go, buddy. Water's that way."
Then he'll try to see if he can lift the fence post. It's only about five feet tall so he could theoretically carry it if it isn't much heavier than it looks.

"Thank you," says the turtle. "You are very kind."

And then the turtle begins slowly walking away, as turtles do.

It won't seem terribly odd that the turtle spoke. That's what anyone would do if they were helped out of a tricky spot, right? It would have been very rude if the turtle hadn't thanked him. He should be just as polite if someone else decides to help him, clearly.

So!

The post!

He begins pulling on it.

Just...

Slowly yanking it out of the ground.

It keeps coming out further. And further. And further and further until it springs free with a rubbery POP! and the thick fog creeping across the ground begins draining rapidly into the hole!

Oh no!

He just pulled the plug!

"Hey wait, how do I get out of here?" calls the mortal to the turtle, since he did do the turtle a favor.

And then a post! Not the kind you're reading right now.
Well not only did that seem to do something unexpected, it turns out it's WAY too long to carry. So with some haste the mortal attempts to shove the post back into the hole. It may not work with all these fog effects flying around.

"To ascend the stairs of sleep you must uncount your sheep," say the turtle cryptically before vanishing into the pond nearby.

That was one hundred percent unhelpful.

Much like all the fog draining down that hole! The mer attempts to plug the hole again, but the post just turns into more fog and gets sucked down the hole in the process! This somehow manages to keep pulling the rope, which may end up wrapping around the mer's leg, which might pull HIM down the hole, too.

He probably doesn't want that to happen.

Our hero does give a very heroic and definitely not terrified yell as his leg is tangled up and drags him into the hole.
But hey!
It was PROBABLY better than getting drowned by the kelpie in that pond, or dealing with whatever had those spooky eyes, right?

The answer is no.

Getting sucked down the hole is NOT better than getting drowned by the kelpie or dealing with whatever had the spooky eyes in that tree.

Because when our hero gets spit out of ANOTHER hollow tree after a few minutes of a VERY wild ride he will find himself right in the middle of the worst thing possible.

A party.

Not just any party.

A Spooktober party. A Spooktober party being put on by fae. A Spooky party full of black dogs and fairy cats and mares and satyrs and fauns and oreads and dyrads and nyads, and even a couple gaiads! There's food! And drink! And music! And games! And he just crashed the party!

From where he's laying in the dirt he'll have a good view of a thing made of bones and fog and grave shrouds looming over him in a very spooky fashion. "Your invitation, sir," the mare requests, extending a skeletal hand toward him.

There's a lot of screaming. Like, a lot.
And then a party!
Well, it does kind of have the thin veneer of the parties he's used to. A bunch of adults standing around games designed for kids way younger than them. And then in the corner a bunch of folks wearing not nearly enough getting wasted and pretending they couldn't have just done that at home. Ugh. Obviously the fact that they're all supernatural things easily capable of destroying him make it a thousand times worse. It's just the kind of observation you make when you're terrified.

With a small eeep our hero jumps to his feet and scoots away from the mare.
"Sorry, buddy. I don't think this is the party I was looking for. If you could just point me to the way out I'll just get out of your way."

The mare just stands (looms?) there.

Unmoving.

With its hand still extending toward our hero even as he scoots away.

It doesn't appear to be going anywhere or doing anything aside from being an abjectly terrifying specter of impending death by the slow rot of time.

Well.
This is quite the predicament.
Our hero turns around but finds that there's nowhere for him to really go. There is, but he's kind of surrounded on all sides. So without much else to do he kind of. Just. Sticks one of his apples into the specter's hand and attempts to continue retreating. Hopefully there's a wall or an edge to this place at some point. It SEEMS to still be part of the forest which means they're technically still outside which means there has to be an outer edge he can just walk away from.

Now there's an apple in the mare's hand and our hero is scooting for all he's worth.

The mare does not appear to be getting any further away.

The mare is also DEFINITELY not moving.

This is probably some sort of dream logic and it is definitely not helpful.

"Is this yours to give away?" the specter asks.

The mortal's eyes flick between the mare and the apple a few times.

"Um. Sure?" he responds tentatively.

I mean, he picked the apples from a tree growing in the middle of a forest. The tree wasn't his but nobody stopped him. If that sentence was untrue it would probably only offend whoever owned that tree. Who is presumably not here. Whatever it takes to get him out of here.

The specter seems content with that, because it just turned and drifted away.

Yeah!

Probably solved!

Now there's just the problem of there being no obvious way to get out of this party.

Well. That could have gone worse. He was afraid he'd get told if he didn't have an invitation they'd use him as the entertainment or something.

Okay. So. He has no idea where he is, there's no way out, and he's surrounded by things that can either kill him or steal his identity. He's going to have to ask someone for help.
Spooky dogs with skulls for faces- obvious no. Satyrs currently chugging an entire wine cask - no, probably too drunk to be helpful even if they wanted to be. Horrible nightmare creatures made of teeth and somehow the terrible feeling of being at a store for three hours without finding what you want - no.
Okay he'll just ask one of the deer-girls. They're all over Inside after the Buttercup incident. They're nice, mostly? Apparently pretty harmless if you don't thank them or let them call you Buttercup.

Our hero goes to approach one of the gaiads who's looking over the party and not currently speaking to anyone.
"Excuse me, do you know the way out of here? I've gotten a bit lost." he asks of the gaiad, trying to stay quiet so everyone doesn't hear him.

Picking a gaiad to harass, huh?

Alright then.

The nearest one is kneeling on a little raised platform with a pumpkin clutched between her hands, one with branches for antlers and a mix of apple and chestnut blossoms woven through her hair. She's staring at the pumpkin.

Very.

VERY intently.

When our hero gets close and starts talking she responds with, "Sshh."

What.

"I'm going to win the staring contest," she clarifies.

She's staring at a jack-o-lantern.

The mortal just kind of stares at the jack-o-lantern. He makes absolutely sure that it is in fact a regular jack-o-lantern. He squints at it.
Then he waits an entire minute. He counts. Only once he does all of that does he risk being wrong.
"I think its eyes are carved on; they can't blink." he whispers to her.

His close inspect reveals the terrible truth.

It is, in fact, a regular jack-o-lantern.

"Hush, I'm not losing again," the gaiad immediately replies.

Maybe he should try talking to someone who's a little less batty?

Now, that's what he meant to say, but no words come out.

He can feel his mouth moving, but he can't seem to actually speak.

In fact, he can't step away either. He can't move at all. The only thing he can do is exist, frozen, in the gaiad's grip as she continues staring into his eyes. Her gaze is intense and unwavering. She won't blink this time. She WILL NOT lose. But he? He can do nothing. He can't move. Or speak. Or escape.

The only thing he can do.

Is blink.

And in blinking, lose.

You are now the jack-o-lantern.

"HAH! I WIN! And you said I was going to lose!" the gaiad says as she springs to her hooves, dances around in a little circle, and then ALMOST spikes the jack-o-lantern straight into the ground in victory. "Oh whoops, shouldn't do that."

Instead she just grins at it.

"So what have you got to say NOW, huh mister nay-sayer?"

Nothing.

Because jack-o-lanterns don't talk.

"Well, I guess leaving you like this wouldn't be very fair, would it? Winners should always be gracious! And smashed pumpkins aren't very good at enjoying parties. Hmmm," Chestnut hums, holding out one hand, which has an apple places in it by a certain skeletal being. "First, you can have this back since it's yours. I'll give you a real invitation once we're done."

She ignites the stem of the apple with a spooky green flame and then drops into the open top of the jack-o-lantern.

"Then we'll just shake you up a little-"
Which she does, shaking the pumpkin vigorously.
"-and then POOF!"

At POOF! she hurls the pumpkin into the ground for REAL this time, which promptly explodes in a huge cloud of bright orange smoke and creepy green flames.

"It's alive! AH HA HA HAH HA! IT'S AAAAALIIIIIIIVE!" Chestnut cackles. When the smoke clears there will be a very confused apple-pumpkin-deer gaiad sitting on the ground. Chestnut immediately hands her a little slip of paper with YOU'RE INVAITED written on it, apparently with a bit of charcoal.

The pumpkin does not react to being combined with an apple. Because it is a pumpkin. But perhaps, to the Queen, it seems to shake a little.

And then it's smashed into a million- oh wait no instead of exploding into a million pieces it explodes into a million pieces, pyrotechnics, and a naked deer-girl. She sputters, trying to raise herself onto her four legs which are rapidly growing adorable little festive pumpkins. Several of the branches such as the ones acting as her antlers and sticking out of her deerbutt ALSO start growing apples.

"Wh-what'd you just do?!" asks Pumpkin, who is just experiencing so many new things at once that she just can't think of anything else to ask. She can't see, but she's a bit larger and older looking than the Springtime gaiads she's met before. She's a stockier kind of deer, too. She needs to be now that she's a walking autumn snack table. Her old self would probably be horrified that with her currently naked, feminine self she looks even more like the stereotypical party girls the fauns made her think of.

This is a very important question.

What did you just do?

And there are many answers to that question.

SO many answers.

Some of them more helpful to Pumpkin's current predicament than others.

And Chestnut replies by giving the least useful answer possible.

"I just gave you an official invitation to the party,"
she says, pointing at the invitation in question. "See?"
