Jade's glad to get away from the pixies, but...
Well, this day just keeps getting weirder and weirder. "Anything we can do about it?" Tristan knows a bit more about fae stuff than Jade. But the entranced woman is a bit more interesting. Jade snaps her fingers in front of the sweeper's face. "Hello? You okay?"

"I'm not sure. Maybe? There might be an enchanted grove around here somewhere. I don't THINK this is a weald. If there were a gaiad here I think I would have noticed," Tristan says.

He's developed not...

Well.

Not a sense of it. That isn't the right word.

More an intuition?

But then they find the sweeper. Jade snaps a few times with no response. She continues sweeping, eyes glazed.

"She's definitely enchanted. Hand on a moment,"
Tristan says as he draws his trust folding shovel and sort of... shoves the woman in the arm with it. Not very hard. Just enough to nudge her with the iron tool.

"Ow what!?" she suddenly exclaims, looking around like a person awakened from sleepwalking. "I... where am... what am I doing out here?"

Sweeping sand, apparently.

"So long as it stays out of our way," Jade grudgingly accepts the fae nonsense, "I swear it has it out for me specifically," she adds under her breath.
Really by now she should know better than to say things like that.

"We were hoping you could answer that question," Jade responds. She shrugs. "It looked like you were trying to sweep away the dune."

Saying things like that is EXACTLY the sort of thing you don't want to say around faeries. Their whole wheelhouse is superstition and magical thinking. Dream logic and nonsense. Jade has almost without question sealed her fate!

Tristan gives her a disapproving look. "You probably shouldn't say that, not even under your breath."

But! There are things more immediately pressing.

The woman looks down at the sand she's been sweeping.

"I... I was sweeping my house and I just kind of... zoned out?" she says, looking increasingly alarmed. "This is... this was one of Old Tuk's pranks, wasn't it? But that's impossible! We killed that monster and buried him!"

"Old Tuk?" Jade doesn't like the sound of that sentence. Not at all. She can read the writing on the wall here.

...she really screwed up by letting that pooka loose, didn't she?

For now it's best to feign ignorance. And probably figure out how to clean up her mess.

PROBABLY no bawling.

But Khannie and Mary DID talk about it. They're teenage girls of course they talked about it. And in Mary's defense she doesn't have some sorta lewd sense. At least not in so far as Khannie is aware.

"Oh, is that it? I woulda thought they would have covered that in, like, remedial dragoning or whatever that class you were taking is called," Khannie reasons before giving a shrug. "I mean, I guess. I still remember all that... stuff from Fortuna's prank. And even if I didn't I know what it feels like when Maridia flies if I really focus on her. My dragon-illusion's wings are kinda different from yours but I guess the basics are still sorta the same?"

That said?

Khannie turns black. Like a girl-shaped shadow sort of black. And then the girl shape begins warping as more shadows are peeled away from several of the large boulders dotting the sandy beach, swirling into her like water down a drain. She gets bigger! But not much bigger. And dragon shaped! But definitely WAY more dragon shaped. Then color and texture resolve to reveal one faewild dragon sitting on her haunches.

"Okay. Uh... What do you know so far?" Khannie asks, spreading her own iridescent wings that shine and flash in the bright winter sun. "Like, what have you tried?"
Beyond the Reaching Sky

"Remedial Dragoning only gave me the basics because I had to get through all of it in a week and they really didn't want to encourage nasty stereotypes. Uh. I have been able to glide. You just hold your wings out."
Easy!
"Um. But I've tried flapping, jumping, particularly windy tunnels and um. Well so far lots of things except jumping off a high place."
Hey, it's good enough for birds, right?

Off the Coast

Hey, you know what's longer than a sword? A polearm sized for a seven foot tall person!
The sword pirate will have to contend with Krayger's careful swings and pokes with his polearm that assault the demony pirate as soon as he's in Krayger's very generous range.
Any swing that connects will result in a crack of lightning and a rather intimidating boom.

"Oh."

Huh.

Khannie didn't know that was just a week long lecture thing. She thought it was an actual semester long class or something.

"Okay, uh, well. If you get a running start and get flapping that helps," Khannie suggests as she leans to the side a bit and looks at Kol's tail. "Not to sound dumb or whatever but I dunno how you're going to steer. Like, your wings have gotta be in the right spot otherwise you start tumbling. Like I've got-"

She folds her larger pair of wings flaps the smaller ones at her hips. "-butt wings. And then I've got like these flappy things on my tail, too."

The faewild dragon flexes the colorful flight surfaces at the end of her tail.

"Maybe just try running and flapping and jumping a bit? Let me see what happens and I can give pointers?"

[Crab Survey]

Yep.

Tristan is getting the same impression here.

They released a prankster and now it is causing trouble.

Oops.

"A terrible, mischievous spirit," the woman replies. "That has played mean spirited pranks on my village for years. We finally managed to catch the beast in its games and imprisoned it, but it must have escaped somehow! Sending people to wander in a haze is just the sort of evil it gets up to!"

That might be a good plan.

Fix the thing they messed up.

"The crabs aren't going anywhere," Tristan replies to Jade sort of question, which gets a pretty weird look from the displaced villager.
"Crabs?"
"Don't worry about it. What direction is your village in?" he asks.

The woman points off in the distance inland. "Harrisford is built right at the fork in the river, where it flows around the Turtle Rock and splits into two riverheads. If we follow the river that'll take us there."

Well Tristan had specifically scheduled this trip to coincide with a period of particularly nice weather.

So there's NO WAY it would start raining right now.

Which is, of course, exactly why it starts raining right now.

Tristan glares at the sky.

"This isn't a natural storm," he groans as the sky grows progressively darker.

Thankfully for Jade getting rained on and getting submerged in water are two different things. But let's be real no one likes getting rained on.

"This is the work of Old Tuk! He's making sure our lives are miserable for his amusement," the woman wails.

Can pookas even do weather stuff?

Oh, not slavers. They're demons like the lot at Hell Bend. Cool, Frigate can handle this. Which is why he's totally ignoring the sword being swung at him as he stands back up again. Unless the sword's enchanted or the demon wielding it is incredibly strong, it likely won't be able to harm him. Frigate is very durable, and has taken a cannonball to the chest before now.

If the demon's strong enough and has good timing, he might be able to keep Frigate down by pushing him off-balance as he stands back up. His neck can't bend, only twist, so he's unusually vulnerable right now.

tnk!

Oh.

Right.

Metal.

Seeing himself deprived of the ability to inflict any serious harm on Frigate, the demon throws his cutlass aside and instead jumps onto him, attempting to pin him to the ground. The next three or four demons that follow do the same thing, attempting to dogpile onto him for good measure.

Krayger has more luck. The first demon that charged at him gets a hammer to the face for his trouble, and in the process gets knocked backward several meters, landing on the deck with smoke rising from his face. He doesn't get up afterward.

The other demons seem reluctant to approach Krayger, staying back just out of range and brandishing their weapons threateningly. That includes the ones that are carrying flintlocks amd blunderbusses, apparently not willing to risk taking a shot at him.

Meanwhile, the boat lurches under them, a frosty wind blowing in fresh over the bow and sweeping over Krayger and Frigate both. It's too dark to see what's happening past that.

Krayger staggers but finds his footing quickly. He glances at the crew, standing back out of his range.
He sighs.
"Move in or surrender. Pick one."
He draws his minotaur-sized revolver from his hip and fires four shots into the demonic crowd. Half of the bullets in his revolver are loaded with HB rounds, (very expensive) silver hollow-points filled with holy water, iron sand, and salt that are almost guaranteed to hurt the things that the normal lead bullets will not.

Beyond the Reaching Sky

Jace was so proud when Khannie had butt-wings of her very own. Except he didn't because it was all a lie.
Kol's wings are a bit more aquatic looking, almost fin-like.
"Um. Okay."

Kol tenses and jumps as high as he can, flapping.
He doesn't seem to be able to get enough lift to actually stay in the air, doing that.

Well, that's rather unfortunate. Frigate's reasonably strong, and unless overbalanced he could lift himself and a demon. Four or five? Eeeh... maybe not. But as they start jumping on top of him, he draws his pistols before they are able to fully immobilise his arms, and he'll prepare to shoot the pile on top of him. "Surrender, the lot o' ye! I be willin' t' show mercy." He might not be in the best place to make that offer, but you never know.

Khannie is full of lies.

It comes from being as wrapped up in illusions as she is. But if perception is reality and perception is a plastic thing then is reality itself malleable?

A little deeper than what Khannie is focusing on right now. It don't help that Kol still looks really cute even though Khannie definitely isn't interested in him.

What no! She's NOT a dragon stop that!

Khannie gives her head a little shake.

"Just jumping isn't gunna help much. Not with how huge you are. You're gunna need to RUN and flap. Just, like, charge down the beach as fast as you can and flap."

And by way of demonstrating Khannie does exactly that. She begins racing down the beach, beating her wings while spreading them wide. Almost immediately she feels the bite on the air as she lifts off, fluttering a dozen or so feet above sand.

Beyond the Reaching Sky

Lots of non-dragons think dragons are cute, Khannie. That's how half-dragons happen.
Don't look at the dragon, Khannie. Not even when he lands face-first in the sand and wiggles around with his butt in the air before he can free himself.
Still, charging down the sand does seem to work a little better. It kicks up a massive amount of sand but Kol starts to rise into the air. He just can't quite make it to fully ascending.

Seriously? Now Jade's fur is all wet. She can barely stand it long enough to shower, getting rained on is awful.

"Such is the nature of stories. The details blur and grow obscured." Askeladd nods. "The way in which it happens can tell us much about the priorities of those who tell them. But regardless, the appearance of the new dragon shouldn't affect your traditions. Do you have any concerns you'd like me to share with her?"
[The Coast]

"Aye, aye." The priest agrees, nodding along in agreement. "Facts become stories, stories become legends which eventually turn into myths. Most of what they once were forever lost to time."

However, once Askeladd mentions 'concerns the priest glances back at the painting. Something which his whole congregation have done occasionally during their entire discussion. Almost as if they expected the dragon to jump out at them at any moment. Since while the gathering have calmed down significantly it still feels as if they're still holding their breath. Expecting another shoe to drop at some point.

"There's one thing." He gestures to it. "You've no doubt observed its lifelike qualities, aye? Well, there's this rumor- ah, more of a local superstition, that the dragon who once lived here still observes the village through it. There's been the occasional magician coming by-" The dwarf gestures to a window in the temple from where Askeladd can see the tavern.

"-even one staying here right now, that had a look at it. They've always said the same thing though. They can never identify the exact enchantment or spell that inhabits the paint but they're sure there's something more to it than mere illusion. As if it was alive somehow, looking back at the observer. Some even claim that the stranger that came here imprisoned the dragon in the painting somehow. But that doesn't really make sense with the rest of the story."

The priest shakes his head. "But whatever the case, it's common knowledge in these parts that dragons go together as oil and water, which is to say not at all. So if a new dragon comes to town this one might get... upset." He gestures towards the painting once more. "Or that's what people might believe at least. As I said, just a local superstition."

Askeladd shakes his head.

"I have learned that it is unwise to dismiss superstitions. If people believe that a battle between dragons can erupt above their heads, things can go sour with time. If you would like, I can examine the painting. I possess some insight into the occult. Perhaps my approach is sufficiently different from that of these magicians to yield fruit."

"You're welcome to have a closer look." The priest remarks as he steps out of the way and gestures towards the enormous painting. "But please try avoid touching it. We had to add a thick glass frame a couple of decades back when a pair decided to take those superstitions to a ill-advised logical conclusion. The painting wasn't harmed, thank the heavens, but all that glass wasn't cheap."

"Of course. I need only take a look," Askeladd assures him as he steps closer and looks at the painting intently. His eyes briefly flash with silver light and his shadow seems to lengthen - but it might be dismissed as a trick of the light.

He regards the painting with the sight of a divine apex predator, one whose insight pierces all magic and deception to arrive at its heart, dissect it and judge it. He has walked the world of mortals and spirits for decades and few things that belong in either can escape his sight.

Ugh.

No.

No way is Khannie even going to think about that.

Khannie gets a little more altitude and banks around, pulling up slightly to arrest her forward momentum and land atop a big boulder sticking out of the sand. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to her. Does Kol have, like, ZERO instincts about flying? Or has he just not really been practicing at all? It's possible that there's some sorta magic that lets him fly. Really, Khannie has a hard time imagining how something as big as Kol would be able to fly WITHOUT it.

Her dragon illusion, by contrast, is SUPER light weight. It isn't that big at all and the flight surfaces provided by her wings are HUGE! Kol is shaped more like one of those manta ray things or whatever. Something made for flying under-water.

"Are you sure you're even supposed to be able to fly?" Khannie asks skeptically. "Like maybe your wings are just for swimming or something?"

[Crab Survey]

A crab survey that is getting increasingly side-tracked.

But that's what happens when you try to do regular, normal things on screen isn't it?

"Of course he can! He is a terrible spirit of great power!" the woman replies, a hint of awe and fear in her voice.

Tristan furrows his brow in consternation at this. He'll lean over to Jade and whisper. "I don't think this is something pookas can DO normally. But for some reason these people all believe he can. That's how fae end up as little gods. People believe they can do things and so they can. Those dreams and imaginations make them stronger. But even though these people thought of him as a god they were still able to seal him. There's definitely something weird going on."

Like untimely rain.

Untimely rain is very weird.

"I don't... I mean, I don't think so?" Tristan replies a bit uncertainly. "I've read a bit about how fae work after the whole buttercup thing. There are way too many kinds and none of them are the same. But the Dreamlands ones are shaped by expectations and beliefs. It might help a little if you didn't believe but if we really wanted to make an impact we would need to convince the villagers that he isn't a god."

Which...

Might be tricky.

As our heroes cross over a row of sand-dunes they'll see a squat, miserable looking village perched atop a huge stone like a hawk slouching atop a snag in the downpour. The river splits around the enormous stone, flowing away to the two riverheads. The stone itself is truly enormous; a massive domed object with its crown capped in shrubbery, trees, fields, and of course the village. It looks like there's a flight of wooden stairs leading from the dunes up to the village.

Also?

It appears to be hailing.

Directly above the fields of the village.

And, for some reason, it is hailing fish along with little balls of ice.

There's that voice again. Awfully high-pitched for someone who seems to have authority with the crew. Not to mention young.

And that's when she'll emerge from the crowd; a young boy, no older than five, wearing an oversized pirate hat and coat, approaching Krayger and Frigate with a hand over his mouth, barely refraining himself from a fit of giggles.

"Welcome aboard the Flying Dutchman, me hearties." The boy cackles, pointing out over the sea. "Ye be part o' me crew now. Lest ye'd care to take a swim fer shore. Don't think ye'd make it that far, though. Am I right, lads?"

The assembled sailors let out a series of sadistic chortles as they lower their weapons. The ones that are on Frigate back off of him, and are even willing to let him stand up, but immediately hook his arms under theirs shortly thereafter, preparing to lead him back toward the sealed hatch.

Krayger looks at the “captain” for all of two seconds and then fires his last two shots at him.

What?

That’s obviously not a real child or he wouldn’t be ordering around a crew full of demons. Clearly just another demon taking on a cute face to make them drop their guard, absolutely classic trick.

”Frigate doesn’t need to breathe.” Krayger isn’t aware that so many of Frigate’s ships have sank so he doesn’t know he’s experienced in getting back to shore on foot.
