[Falling Down the Stairs]

No, where Ash is from, a lot of people can turn into animals, and even non-animals. Her sister and best friend can turn into a tank and a shark respectively.

Shit, they're going to be so worried about her.

Ash says nothing while she follows Sune, partially because she's nervous about her surroundings and partially because she can't speak as a spider. Once they are at the metal beast, she stands up, reverting to her human-ish form. "Look, don't take this as me chickening out, but... wouldn't it be easier to go around this thing?"

Still, if Sune continues on, Ash will follow him.

[Falling Down the Stairs]

We'll start with Kol.

As he grabs the spear and runs out of the armory with it he'll hear a voice. Like a buzzing in the ear. Like he has a little earbud that's talking to him. But he isn't wearing any such thing. Weird.

New wielder detected. Calibrating, please wait.

Huh.

Well!

That's interesting, isn't it?

The spear doesn't do anything else in the mean time, aside from little glowing lines beginning to fill up with shine like parts of a very stabby loading bar.

Outside the beast, meanwhile, Sune glances back at Ash with a look that suggests he thinks that's the most absurd question he's ever heard.

Because it is.

"No. We won't reach were we're going if we go around. This is where the sealed door is."

Obviously.

Where do these people who don't know about the forest keep coming from?

After he's done looking at Ash like she's a complete fool, he turns and climbs up inside the metal beast. "Kol! I found the one who was speaking it's a girl."

He doesn't mention the part where she's green and has lots of arms since that doesn't seem important or relevant to him. The pair should be coming upon Kol right as he opens the door to the supply depot inside the giant robot. The room in quest is nearly pitch black, which may be a problem. Makes it hard to see any power cells that might be hidden somewhere.

"...Right." Ash answers. She still doesn't get why a locked door would lead to the way out and not a locked room.

"I have a name, you know. It's Ash."

Suddenly, the pain in her arm flares up again. A few more drops of blue blood run down it. "Rrrrgh..." she grumbles. "Hey, kid. You know how to patch up a wound?"

Kol smiles brightly at the pair. Ash is weird but he lives in Inside he just has to get used to it.
"Welcome back, Sune. I found a shiny spear! Do either of you guys have a light? Or nightvision? The power we need to open the door is in here somewhere.

Oh. Wounds? Uh. I can bandage a wound if you have something to bandage it with."
Kol got the very basics of first aid, nothing more.

"That's good. Only beasts don't have names," Sune wisely observes as they make their way through the guts of the machine. Ash begins complaining of her wound just in time for Kol to offer bandaging it. "Sometimes there are treasures for binding wounds. And treasures for making them, too."

Like the spear Kol discovered!

Sune eyes it with wonder. "It's strange to find a treasure like that in the shallows. You must be very lucky."

Lucky isn't something Sune would really consider himself. He hasn't found many good strokes of fortune in the forest. Everything he's accomplished has been thanks to guile, strength, and fortitude.

"Keys usually shine in the dark," Sune says as he pushes the door open. "But sometimes they're hidden. I've got a treasure for seeing."

And that said?

He pulls out a little plastic LED flashlight from his satchel and turns it on. He pans the light across the room, illuminating several storage crates. Spare parts, spare rations, medical supplies, cleaning supplies. Things of that nature. Thankfully it doesn't look like the little robot crabs are as interested in these things.

The spear is, apparently, still calibrating.

"Night vision? Easy." Ash turns into the giant spider again, granting her full vision in the dark. After getting a good look at the layout of the room and what's in it, she returns to human form.

Ash looks at Kol with an unimpressed expression. "If I had something to bandage it with, I would have done it myself." she says, irritably. Ash turns back into a spider for dark vision, moves towards the cabinet with medical supplies, and starts messingly searching through it for bandages and other first aid items to help with a wound.

The Shallows

An individual is here. They seem to be male, and very attractive, with tanned skin and dark brown hair. He's wearing a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, but no shoes. For now, he's unconscious, slumped against a tree and moving only to breathe.

"That's a very nice treasure, Sune." Kol tells the other guy, trying to make him feel better.
The supply closet makes him feel better. All the rations and medical supplies that are still good and they can carry. Seems like quite the haul to him.
He'll see if he can fill his pockets before digging through the boxes for something that looks like a power core. He'd offer to bandage the spider now that they have bandages but with her attitude, he'll just let her do it herself like she's offering.

[Falling Down the Stairs]

There aren't any bandages in the medical cabinet. Instead there are bottles of trauma spray and-

Oh.

Hmm.

THOSE look kind of like adhesive medical strips. Except peeling the backing off will reveal an iridescent and somewhat needly looking surface of high tech healing supplies. Like a super bandage! That's helpful, right?

"It's a good treasure for seeing,"
Sune confirms. It's just as magical to Sune as any of the other treasures one might find in the forest. And best of all it can make light without kindling a flame, which is important sometimes.

Speaking of light, Sune's treasure is starting to dim. He unfolds a little crank from the side of the treasure and begins turning it with great vigor! In no time it's nice and bright again.

Gathering up food is definitely a good idea and Sune is mostly after that. He knows that the food treasures sealed inside the crinkly husks are usually tasty.

And Kol? Inside the spare parts locker he'll find a small metal prism glowing with muted white light.

"Oh! You found a key."

[The Shallows]

Reclining on the forest floor isn't always the healthiest place to be. The castaway isn't that deep, maybe just a few hundred feet below the surface of the canopy. There's still plenty of light here. And plenty of underbrush. And plenty of hungry insects.

There are a number of interesting things nearby. The wreckage of an old canopy ship, covered in vines and dashed to pieces by its fall. A huge stone head covered in moss and bearing an austere expression. A tangle of roots forming a shape something like a heart, the gaps filled in with what appears to be honey. And an old gas station pump half way buried in the mud.

A weaselly looking creature cautiously descends from one of the trees and approaches the man, its movement halting and uncertain. It creeps closer, gradually, until at last it's within reach to bite his toe.

The Shallows

The man groans and slowly sits up, pulling his foot away from the weaselly thing so it doesn't have a chance to bite his toe. He'll rub his head and look around, twisting his head around far further than it should be able to go, were he truly human. But he isn't, he just looks like one. "Sorry, small thing, but you can't eat me. And I don't know if I can eat you. I'm going over there, though. You can follow, if you want. See if anything happens that would let you eat." The man's got a slight Dutch accent, and he gestures to the canopy ship as he speaks, before he turns away from the weaselly thing and heads towards the ship, trying to find a way in to hopefully find some shoes.

[The Shallows]

The fisher (or whatever it is) makes an alarmed noise and bounds away as soon as the man begins moving. It scrambles a good fifteen feet up the trunk of a tree and begins scolding him for having the temerity to move around when it was trying to eat his toes.

It otherwise doesn't reply.

Approaching the ruined canopy ship isn't terribly difficult.

The ship IS, however, a mess.

About what one would expect from a large two masted sailing ship crashing hundreds of feet to the ground. Should the man look up he'll be able to see several branches and a clearing in the canopy above where it fell through. Thin spots in the canopy are always a danger to ships. What looks like a safe place to sail over might actually be dangerously thin, as the occupants of this ship discovered.

The ruins are splayed open like the carcass of an animal, bits of wood and rigging spread around over the forest floor. Given the relative lack of rot, the ship probably hasn't been here long. Judging from the scattered bones near the wrecked ship, the crew didn't survive and got themselves eaten by scavenging forest animals in a hurry.

Depending on where the man is from, he might find it odd to have discovered a sailing ship in the middle of a forest.

In one of the few intact parts of the hull it appears as though someone has fashioned a make-shift shelter.

They've also set up an effigy of sticks with a skull on top of it.

Clearly the work of a person, but a not a very welcoming one.

Near one of the bone piles outside the man will find exactly one shoe that's about two sizes too small.

Ash, still in spider form, pulls the band-aid from the cabinet and peels off the backing. She stares at the healing instruments, trying and failing to make sense of them. She turns back into a humanoid and brings the object up to Sune's flashlight. "You have any idea how I'm supposed to patch a wound with this?"

Falling Down the Stairs

"I would assume you slap it onto a cut and it heals." Kol says simply as he starts stuffing his pockets with rations and bandages.

He does not, in fact, have any idea if that's true. But it looks like a bandage, so why would it act any different than another kind just because it's high-tech?

The man's from a port-city; he's familiar with ships. The fact this one's in a forest is a little odd, but given they're made of wood perhaps they built it here and were going to transport it elsewhere after. There could be a river just down hill, close enough to roll the ship to- or something. He may be familiar with ships, but he's neither shipwright nor sailor.

He picks up the shoe and presses it against his foot, concentrating as his foot shrinks. Unfortunately, he proves unable to alter his foot two sizes, so the single shoe is of no help to him. He tosses it aside and his foot slowly returns to its original size. Inside the ship, he'll glance at the shrine and approach the shelter. Whoever built it might not be friendly, and might be dangerous. However, chances are they're going to find out he's here sooner or later, so may as well get it over with and make a good impression. He knocks against the side of the hull near the shelter and calls out. "Hello? Is anyone there? My name's Adrie, I don't mean any harm. Do you have shoes?"

[Falling Down the Stairs]

Since Kol is busy collecting the food and medical treasures Sune picks up the key and, since this is always the best thing to do when finding keys, briefly holds it above his head with both hands.

This is a very important ritual.

He wouldn't want to offend the forest.

That done, he stows it away in his satchel for use in the near future.

When the medical treasures are brandished at him he replies with a nod. "There's a husk on the back. You peel it off and press the shiny part over the wound. If it's too small you can stretch it."

He makes stretching motions with his hands by way of demonstration. "For big wounds you should use some of the bottled treasure first. If you pull on the part there-" he points at the trigger on the spray bottle. "-and it comes out that end."

Sune really isn't surprised by the lack of knowledge these two have at this point. People going into the forest to try to find medicine treasures is a very common thing, but usually they only go into the shallows. Where these two from a village that was on such a high mountain-top that they've never been near the forest before?

[The Shallows]

There's no sound from within the hollowed out hull of the ship.

Aside, of course, from the thunk of the knocking.

Somewhere in nearby a cicada begins screeching loudly. In the distance a bird gives a shrill, trilling whistle shortly to be followed by an answering call. The inside of the hull smells smokey and lived in. The scent of someone who hasn't had a bath in too long. Along with a musky, pungent, wild animal sort of smell.

It would appear as though no one is home at the moment.

Maybe they're out hunting?

Maybe they're dead.

The man may notice something else odd about the ship, given that he's familiar with ship building. There are an awful lot of egg-shaped stones nearby with whirled marks etched into them. The stones are about big enough to fill up two hands. They're scattered around on the ground. Maybe ballast? Usually people don't bother carving markings into ballast stones. But it looks like quite a bit of effort was put into these.

The Shallows

Well, if no one is home, there's no one to complain if he looks about their shelter, is there? He'll reach down and grab one of the potentially ballast stones so he has something hefty to hand and push aside whatever is serving as a door so he can enter. He doesn't call out again, and instead concentrates and increases his presence. He doesn't seem to physically change, but even armed with a heavy stone he seems trustworthy and honest, so if there is someone they'll be encouraged to interpret his presence and actions in the best possible way.

[The Shallows]

There IS someone to complain.

Maybe.

They might complain after he leaves.

Or they might return and complain while he's there. Life is a mystery that way. And this forest is doubly mysterious.

The man(?) pushes aside the bit of sail that serves as a door and steps inside. The first thing he'll notice is that it's pretty dark. All things considered, this shouldn't come as too much a shock. The interior of ships, if they aren't being lit, are often quite dark. And this one most certainly is NOT being lit. There are a few stray rays of light filtering through the damaged boards, but otherwise the compartment is sealed save for-

A chimney hole.

For letting smoke out.

This part of the ship probably used to be the hold and its PARTLY upright. The bottom has been broken up pretty badly and whoever has been living here has been making do with a packed earth floor. A small circle of stones (those egg shaped whorled rocks again) serves as a fire pit. There are still a few embers glowing in there, so whoever lives here must have been in recently. The area is strung with various colorful objects for decorations with a special emphasis on strange little disks with holes in the middle that are highly reflective on one side. They dangle all over the cabin, hanging from strings through their middles and catching any light that filters into the cabin. There are also bits of colorful cloth, half a poster advertising a magician, and some strange looking machinery with a metallic prism covered in lines that glow with muted white light.

There's a hammock strung up in one corner and an old chest that appears to be locked.

Also?

There are a number of bones scattered about on the floor. Considering that some of those bones look human that may be concerning.

The individual who claimed to be named Adrie glances at the embers and ignores them. It's dark, so he can't see very well, but sorts the issue by hawking up a glob of phlegm that glows in the dark, smearing it onto his rock as he explores. He's not going to touch the discs, instead walking over to the machine. He's got no idea what it is or what it might be used for, but perhaps there's something written on it he can understand.

Ash smirks. "Alright, but if this thing ends up electrocuting me or something, I'll bite you."

To Sune, she rolls her eyes and says "Kid, I know how to use a spray bottle. And anyways, all that other stuff is for pansies. A good bandaging fixes anything." After that, she stretches out the bandage to fit her wound as best as she can, then slaps it on.

[The Shallows]

There is in fact writing on the side of the machine. Not instructions, though.

Maybe a logo of some kind?

There are several buttons on the machine's face, though. Just begging to be pushed. There's no indication what so ever to the purpose of the device. Really, the only way to find out would be to start fiddling with it. And that might not be the wisest course of action, would it? None of the buttons have letters on them, only symbols. A triangle, a circle, and square, and two smaller circles one above the other.

Very mysterious!

That shrilling trilling whistle sounds against from outside, louder this time.

[Falling Down the Stairs]

The patch stretches as if it were made of putty and then gets slapped on without trouble!

It immediately sticks fast to Ash's skin and begins feeling tingly and a little itchy. It's probably doing something?

Sune, meanwhile, frowns. "No one has known anything about the forest so far. I don't know the things you know and the things you don't."

Kol makes sure he has some of that spray on him since it sounds like the dumb girl is too tough to take any of the life saving miracle cure.
Once he's all set he's going to help Sune take the key back to the panel. He's not sure Sune knows how to read.

Ash frowns slightly. Is she allergic to Band-Aids or what? Eh, it's probably nothing.

"Listen, if you were raised in a desert town, you wouldn't need to know much about forests either." Ash says, getting distracted from the fact that Sune apparently thinks spray bottles are exclusive to the forest.

"You probably would, but not me. Know why? 'Cause I'm Ash, and that's A to the 'shush'." I was hoping for a chance to use that line. Anyways, Ash doesn't know that 'electrocution' doesn't mean the same as 'shock'.

[Falling Down the Stairs]

Sune can tell there's some hostility going on between these two random people he encountered in the forest, but he isn't sure what if anything he should do about it? They've hardly spoken more than a handful of words and they're already being unpleasant!

"Please don't fight. You should only fight things in the forest if you mean to eat them," Sune warns. He feels that's an important thing to keep in mind. The forest has rules, after all. And the rules are important. You don't want to offend the forest.

Sune moves back toward the sealed door and carefully inserts the key he found into the slot for it, causing the black glass above the slot to begin shining with lights. He's seen such things before and he's very clever, so he knows which lights to touch to make the doors open. It's the one with the two triangles pointing away from each other.

There comes a hissing sound from the door as the seals all pop loose, shortly before there comes some clanks from within the door and finally it swings open. Beyond?

The metal beast's back is all torn open, leaving the way open to step back out into the forest just beyond the lip of the gully carved into the earth. Sune heads outside, pausing briefly to smell the air. Damp. They're definitely getting close to the fog. Closer to the fog means closer to the canopy. And closer to the canopy means the forest is getting shallower. It's always good to know that you're going the right way.

Walking out in the clearing, surrounded as it is by marble pillars and statues, Sune moves curiously. He scrapes his bare feet across the moss, revealing muddy stone below. He feels tense. And tenseness he often feels when-

"I think there's a guarding beast somewhere nearby. They like guarding doors,"
he cautions the others.

"Not fighting. Just explaining what stuff is." Like how a bandage is a bandage and electrocution is death by electricity. It's not any more condescending than the looks Sune has been giving him at any turn.

Still, progress is good! It's nice to see something that seems to be progress.
Even if it's possibly dangerous. Whoops. Kol looks down to check if his spear is finally finished calibrating.

"You know, there's a very large gap between what you shouldn't do, and what you can't do. For example, no-one should be this effortlessly cool, but I do it anyways." Ash replies. Rules are made to be broken, right?

Ash follows Sune out of the door. Ergh... damp air. She hates that.

Sune still looks concerned, but he doesn't say anything. Sometimes words aren't needed, right? Hopefully everything will be well. Both of the people he found had a weapon so Sune is sure they must know how to use them. Otherwise why would they carry it? When Sune went down into the forest he carried no weapon. He relied on his cleverness to survive. And he learned to use the teeth the forest had given him as a gift. Those were both enough.

He's sure they'll still be enough when the guardian appears.

And appear the guardian does.

A rustling. A rush of wind. And then a huge baboon leaps out of the trees and lands with a crash. A huge BLUE ape. With a bright red face and a bright red butt. Wielding a LOG that has been chopped off at both ends and capped with rings of metal. The beast is easily fifteen feet tall and pockmarked with scars from previous battles.

The ape smiles a wide, sharp-toothed smile.

"Ants," he grunts derisively.

Calibration complete.

Oh hey.

That's handy.

Ash immediately draws her Vielhander from her back upon seeing the monster. It's a massive starmetal alloy blade, about 8 feet long from pommel to tip (Ash, being about 7 foot 1, can just barely carry it on her back without it having to drag across the ground). She uses 4 hands to hold it, which technically makes it more vier than viel, but that's besides the point.

"A spider and an ant are a lot different." Ash narrows her eyes and bares her venomous fangs. "For example, ants can't do THIS!"

Ash charges the ape with her sword, aiming a heavy swing at its right leg once she's close enough. She'll then try to run in between its legs so that she's behind the monster and not in a vulnerable position.

Falling Down the Stairs

Oh no a guardian ape. Hopefully it doesn't have too many phases.
Kol lowers himself and brandishes his spear while starting to circle around the creature. He mostly knows how to use a spear for fishing but at least he knows how to hold it.
He also runs a hand along the haft of the spear looking for some form of control. If it has a computer in it, it clearly has SOME form of advanced weaponry inside. Maybe that's just a balance system or something to make the blade heat up?
"Systems. Controls?" he whispers, wondering if the computer in the spear might have a menu.

Starmetal?

So like nickel iron alloy?

Or something more esoteric?

Probably something more esoteric that's usually how this stuff works.

Anywho! Monster stabbing time!

Sune begins moving away from the others, spreading out just in case the beast decides to sweep its tree trunk through them while they're grouped up and crush all their bones. He wonders what it shoots.
