"That does not sound like you saw anything." Kyrie replies, eyebrow raised. "A large person with a tail? What kind of tail? Something bushy, like the wolfen around here? Or perhaps sinewy, like a lizard? Curled like a scorpion? And for that matter... large how? Large as in stout, strong? Or large as in having eaten far too much?"

The wolf-man leans in close to the tiger-lady. "If you see even that much and insist on passing along the information so vaguely, you do these people a disservice. If you do not see even that much, what you are doing here borders on fraud." He slides the coin forward to her side of the table. "I will not ask for my money back. But I will be having words with this event's organizers and I strongly suggest you raise the standards of your service if you continue to demand payment."

"For the first question, bushy. For the second, yes."
She sniffs in disdain, pulling her hands away. Kyrie might feel the slightest tug from her claws.
"I'm the town witch. People expect these things from me so they know I'm not some strange hermit killing their pets with hexes at midnight. But if you want to go around and be allergic to fun, I think there's some rocks by the beach you can try sitting on."
The lady pulls the cloth up on the crystal ball with her nose in the air and leaves with it, going into a nearby house.

Well.

That could have gone better.

Kyrie sighs and stands up, letting out a little groan as his vertebrae pop back into place. He was hoping not to have back issues until he was much older, but anatomical rewrites do that to a man, it seems.

...Ah, well. Maybe she's right. He did only pay her a single silver piece, after all. She's here to entertain, not inform. And if entertainment's all she's going to do, maybe it would be best to just leave her be.

Kyrie waits around for a moment, internally debating going up to the house and apologizing properly. But, then again, at this hour, she may have simply decided to settle down for the night and he'd be interrupting her dinner or getting dressed for bed.

...Oh, wait. She didn't take the money he gave her. He can correct that, at least.

Kyrie racks up the silver piece between his claws and makes his way up to the house in question. The wolf-man awkwardly clears his throat and raps a couple of times on the door, waiting patiently for her to answer.

After a while the lady does open the door, now dressed in a particularly fluffy bathrobe.
"Oh come on it hasn't even been five minutes. What are you complaining about now?"
There's the faint sense of herbs and a wood fire.

"I didn't come to complain." Kyrie explains simply, holding out the coin for her. "I came because, meager though it may be, you probably do not want your earnings stolen."

Kyrie's nose twitches as the smell reaches him. Yeah, she's definitely preparing dinner. At least that's what he hopes she's doing. She's wasting a lot of basil if it's not being used for cooking.

The lady doesn't seem particularly pleased by the interruption and snatches the coin from his hand.
"Well that's very polite."
And then goes to close the door in his face. How dare he go and do something polite when she's plotting WITCHY REVENGE? Very inconvenient.

Now, where was she? Ah right, anointing an idol of her victim with the fur she clipped from him with her claws and a potion she's been brewing. Let's see how he stays a grumpy stick in the mud after being hit with Pascal's Party Pooper Preventer! Now he'll find that he's able to digest alcoholic beverages and be affected by them like a normal human!

With a splash of her STRONGEST herbs, is he also stricken by Sera-Hyzelay's Impossible Pairing! It will adjust his preferences to facilitate love~ if he encounters someone he would legitimately like if not for such issues.

We'll see how he thinks being told about the importance of telling people how you feel and drinking responsibly when he's in a happy relationship and being able to enjoy a nice night at a dining establishment or social event with his significant other!

...So she understands what politeness is, but actively rejects the concept.

Kyrie frowns, standing unflinchingly despite the door being slammed about a centimeter from his snout.

Ugh. Witches.

The wolf-man turns and walks away, heading back toward where he'd left his niece, just as she's getting off the phone.

"So, um... I might have forgotten that I have a thing with Henry tonight." Owena winces. "But Codebreaker wants to meet up. So, um... I gotta go try to be a good girlfriend, but I'm gonna be leaving you in capable hands, okay?"

"...Yes. All right." Kyrie claps Owena on the back. "You go and have some fun together. Just promise me no drinking."

"...Five minutes ago you were okay with us going to a bar together."

"Yes. Together. Where I could keep an eye on you amd make sure nobody was going to hurt you."

"And you don't think Henry can? Or better yet, that I can look out for myself?"

"...I just need to know that you're safe." Kyrie says quietly. "After what happened with Siana, and with Arthfael missing..."

Owena's expression softens and she pulls her uncle into a hug. "...Don't worry about me. Henry'll be with me the whole time. My phone's on, charged, and the ringer's turned up to maximum. We'll stay near the crowds so nobody tries anything. And I'm not going to let myself get more than two drinks in." She smiles reassuringly. "Will that be enough?"

"...All right. I'll see you in a few hours." Kyrie gives her one last hug, before the two part ways.

No less than five minutes after this conversation, there’s a familiar shadow over the door as Codebreaker enters, careful not to damage the door.

”Good evening, Sir Knight. How’s my favorite person?”
Codebreaker claps Kyrie on the shoulder and the strigoi might feel the snap of static electricity. Codebreaker is, of course, dressed in his typical shorts and tropical shirt that he hasn’t bothered to button or close in any way. It’s hot in July and he has a fur coat!

Kyrie finds his mind pulled to what the witch was talking about. Surely people don’t really think they’re a couple? That’s not what he’s into.
His friend sure is big though. And they do say things about that.
Kyrie might realize he’s been staring at the view in front of him a moment before Codebreaker’s customary bear-hug greeting crushes him into it. There may be strange resulting feelings.
”So! Where are we going? Owena was talking about bars. I have never seen you drink but that just makes the first time more special!”

There's definitely static between the two of them as Codebreaker takes his seat. What's not clear is if it came from him or Kyrie. While Codebreaker will certainly have seen Kyrie at his most stressed in the past, today he looks almost like he lost a fight with a space heater in a bathtub. His fur is all up on end, puffed out in a way conparable to having just been on the receiving end of a blow-dryer job.

What might seem a bit rarer to Codebreaker is that he visibly tenses when the wolfen approaches him.

Absum help him, his friend expects to go walking around the town dressed like that? No wonder people thought they were a couple! The man left his sense of modesty in the wash!

"...What are you talking about?" Kyrie rumbles, pulling himself out of the customary bear-hug with an embarrassed-looking shuffle. "You've seen me drink plenty. I always bring home those extra bottles from work, rem-"

...Oh.

That's right.

Codebreaker doesn't usually see that. He's asleep then.

"...Ah, well. You're not missing much."

But of course he's going outside in that, Kyrie. Codebreaker only buttons his shirts when he's cold or wants to actually look professional. Which generally means he's doing Shrine stuff, the community service he does from time to time like working the town carnival, or someone in the Maldwyn is doing something important or romantic. Khannie and Henry seem like nice kids and he'd never risk them thinking the Maldwyns associate with people as slovenly as he very much is.

Codebreaker puts his hands to his hips and leans forward with knowing raised eyebrows at Kyrie (gosh he's big).
"Aren't I? I mean I didn't even know you could drink at all."
The town witch certainly didn't. PPPP might have some side effects when used on someone who could already digest alcohol.
"...are you okay? I'm getting some weird vibes from you today. Did I spill something on myself or something?" Codebreaker looks down at himself, trying to figure out why Kyrie is staring at his chest.

"Well..." Kyrie straightens. "...Not exactly, no. The open shirt is just... distracting." He frowns, looking away. "...Would you kind terribly? It's going to be difficult to concentrate if you leave it like that."

Between the rolls, the fur, and the relatively-new muscle, Kyrie will readily admit that Codebreaker's chest is... visually, quite interesting. Not entirely unpleasant- the shape it's in now is the product of hard work and they both have every reason to be proud of that- but ultimately, distracting. Like if Codebreaker had chosen to wear a bib to the bar. It's not entirely normal, really, is it?

Kyrie gestures for Codebreaker to follow him as he escorts the wolfen toward the Howling Tankard, a relatively small and obscure bar in town. "...That 'vibe' you are feeling is probably Owena." He continues, his voice a bit lower. "She's promised me she'll be safe, and I believe her, but... you know how things have been for my family lately. I... can't quite seem to get my hackles down."

b had a hand in Codebreaker's current bulk, but they did express quite clearly to them that it was only by their hard work and what CB had already achieved that made this end result a Possibility. They just gave CB the blessing of living up to the potential of multiple of his lives instead of what he could have done in one.

"But- no it's fine Kyrie. Sure." Codebreaker buttons his shirt even though he's confused. He's left his shirt open all the time and it's never been an issue before. "But you should be careful. I hear some wolfen are like, legit nudists."
Given some photos he found buried in his predecessors' things, this might include original CB's family.

CB tries not to say that the worry isn't just what he's sensing. He has trouble tuning out other people's thoughts about himself most of all.
"Kyrie, you have to remember the lesson Absum tried to give you. He made you stick to that look so you'd realize those kids didn't need a knight all the time. You can't be there for them all the time." Perhaps vexingly, CB puts an arm around Kyrie and pulls him in close again.
"And I know it took a while and it wasn't quite how you'd have thought, but I brought Siana home like I said I would didn't I? We're going to get your family back in order. I promise."

"Two weeks before Arthfael disappeared!" Kyrie hisses in protest. "And Siana came back... not at all like her old self! And with clear baggage that she has refuses to speak about!" The corners of Kyrie's mout pull up into a low growl. "And I need not mention the night Owena's head ended up spread halfway over your kitchen because of a home invader!"

Kyrie lets out a little sigh, rubbing the bridge of his snout. "...Absum may be telling me to stand down. But it very much seems as though the whole of creation is attempting to tell me otherwise. It is... maddening."

"Really? She alternates between smiling and brooding at the drop of a hat, with baggage she refuses to speak about? That sounds like her old self to me. Her change (physical as it was) was her own judgement to make, mistake or not."
He growls at the other example. "You know what I did to that bitch. I'd have returned the favor entirely if I didn't need the message sent to her scummy little bosses."

"And I don't think that any answer is absolute. Telling you to stand down doesn't mean you have to put down your sword for good. I mean, if someone actually screwed with your family you know we're going to tear their door down." he thinks about that image. They'd certainly have to get through that door one at a time.
"You know I've heard in some places a mystic shrine guardian gets a special-made club. A big wooden thing with metal studs stuck into it to make it crack armor. Been thinking about having one made." Even though he does, in fact, own several firearms that would do the job just as well. It's a symbolic thing.
It would be very good at breaking down doors.

"Believe me, you do not have any priestly duties here today." Kyrie replies, scratching at something under his chin. "And if you did, the congregation is in another direction. Back home, the notion that one must defend one's children... or those entrusted to them, in my case... from everything that could harm them is regarded as both foolhardy and its own form of cowardice. If they never learn to defend themselves because their parents were too busy defending them instead, it weakens their line and brings disgrace to their house. One must learn to let go, to trust them to fight their own battles and to grow as we have."

Kyrie pauses just long enough to accept a pair of beer bottles from the bartender and hand one to Codebreaker. "Easy words to say. Harder, by far, to put them into action. Especially as history suggests I have not been appropriately prudent. I do not know that both of my nieces are coming home this morning and it is far from impossible that they will not, and that there is more I could have done to see to their safety." Kyrie pops the top off the bottle. "And yet here I am, having drinks with a friend instead of doing any of those things. It begs the question; am I doing the right, honorable thing?"

Codebreaker holds down his impulse to comment that he probably hopes that the kids don't go growing as much as they have.
"And this is where I think Absum needed to come in. They needed a dad, Kyrie. Not a bodyguard. And that means doing the hard part of parenting and letting them live their lives when they need to. It also includes the part where you get to live your own life without defining yourself purely on taking care of them. Which is why I've spent the last year trying to get you a hobby. But we're here now so we'll call it progress."
CB takes the cap off easily with a claw, offering the bottom to Kyrie to clink before they take their first pull.

tnk!

Kyrie gives the bottle a little swig, catching the neck between his teeth and sealing what little lip he has around the glass; a drinking method that gets him puzzled looks from the rest of the bar.

"...And again, easier said than done." The strigoi mutters, setting the slightly-mauled bottle back on the bar with a little clunk. "Putting aside the threat of harm to my nieces, and the unknown fate of my nephew, I... must confess, my personal interests have gone unexplored. I would not even know where to start, apart from the obvious answer of what we are doing now."

Codebreaker, being a civilized wolf, just uses a straw no matter how silly it looks. It's the drink method of choice for people with less flexible lips than a human.
"Well, first off, I appreciate your love of weaponry and such, but it's really not much of a hobby. You can't afford new ones and it makes your mind go back to your old habits, so that's out. We can keep our routines but that can't be it.

Now, the next issue is that most hobbies I like involve electricity or at least being able to see what you're doing. Which is hard in a brick hut at night with no plumbing or electricity. I mean, I'd love to get you in on my raid group but really you can't do that without finally letting me help you redo that shack. Ooor you guys finally accept my offer and move in."

He's been offering them that for ages, ever since Siana more or less permanently moved out and Kyrie and Owena practically live at his house anyway.

"...Hmp."

Codebreaker should be familiar with that sound by now. Kyrie's go-to "we're not having this conversation again" sound. It's a point of pride that he built that shack with his own two hands; even with its shortcomings, he's not ready to abandon it. That everyone but him has already moved out makes it an easier decision; he's not inconveniencing anybody but himself these days. And besides, if he moved in with Codebreaker, those rumors that the two of them were a couple would only get worse.

"...Masonry." He says after a moment, taking another swig. "I could go into masonry."

"I mean sure, but isn't that more of a job than a hobby?" Codebreaker asks.
"You'd probably make more money as a mason than a bouncer, but you'd need to probably get a real apprenticeship to be good at it. Not that you don't honestly have time for that since you're immortal and all. But...I don't think any of the crews in town work at night." Being a not-vampire does put a damper on things, doesn't it?
"I mean you've liked at least one of the games I showed you. Did you ever try learning the real instrument? I could try to find more games for you." though that still runs into the electricity issue.

"It may be beneficial to be the first." Kyrie mutters, before giving a little shake of his head. There's probably a good reason why no masonry crews operate at night, even if the ones in town are mostly populated by habitually nocturnal animals. Likely a safety issue or something.

"...Maybe I should take up an instrument." Kyrie muses, stroking his chin. "It would certainly represent a fresh challenge. Music does... not come naturally to me." He tilts his head. "Not that I haven't tried. But my own work is always... it is not very musical."

The wolf-man's ears perk up and his hand flies to his side at the sound of a phone ringing, but it quickly becomes apparent that the owner is a but further down the bar and more concerned with stock trades than anything that intersects with Kyrie's business.

"...Absum help me, it's going to be a long night." Kyrie mutters, finishing the bottle (already) and putting down the money for another one.

Luckily, everyone knows that most of the time bigger people get drunk slower. Being quite large gentlemen, Kyrie and Codebreaker will take a while to get intoxicated.
Unless of course Kyrie were to be a total lightweight from his original human biology and recently being hexed with a blessing to be a fun drunk.
"Well, I think you seem like a base or drummer kind of guy to me.
Is there something else bothering you? There's something off about you today and it isn't just worry. You know I try to turn my brain off when I'm around people but I can't do it all the way."

Right. Codebreaker can read thoughts now. Because that's something he'll be responsible with.

"...I suppose there is." Kyrie frowns, popping the bottlecap off with his teeth. "The question of family has some had some... it's been making me think." He pauses, looking up at Codebreaker and giving him the time needed to get in the borderline obligatory "don't hurt yourself" before continuing.

"Before Owena, Siana and Arthfael, I did not think there was a family in my foreseeable future." Kyrie says, taking a deep swig of the beer. "I never met the right woman, you see. I was not sure if she even existed, or if she was not already married or betrothed to a more worthy man than I. And in any case, we would be slow to produce heirs... that is not an act that is undone if done badly, so it would need to be treated with appropriate caution." The wolf-man shrugs. "If I met my future wife tonight, I would expect five years until the wedding and another five until our eldest is born. Having children would be something that would happen... 'some day'."

The strigoi chuckles and shakes his head. "Absum had other plans." He continues. "And so I found myself with three young ones to watch over. And with that reality in front of me... well..." The wolf-knight bobs his head side to side. "...It's been something like reading the last few chapters of a book. One can't help but wonder about everything that comes before. What it would be like to meet the future missus Redmont. Our first date, our proposal, our wedding day, our..."

Kyrie trails off, blinking slowly and shaking his head. "...Potent medicine they serve here." He mutters. "Normally I'm three bottles in before I start speaking that fancifully."

Codebreaker says nothing at Kyrie's pause. His snark tends to die down when people are actually being serious.
"Well, maybe that's just what Absum wanted for you. With everything going on, the strigoi thing and all, you couldn't have had your own children, so he made sure you still wound up with some."
Codebreaker shrugs, swiveling on his stool so he can lean against the bar.

"Me, my dating's always been weird. I've had a boyfriend or two but it never really worked out, you know? And moving here and taking up my new life, things got a little funny. I kind of had one night with a werewolf but that wasn't well, what that sounds like. And I dunno, you're the only guy in this town I've ever really hit it off with and you're not- you know."
He waves a hand.

"But you'll get someone! You're a good guy and you've really settled into your new self. Even if, and I'm saying it out loud so Absum has it on record, I think that of the two of us, you should have been the one to end up with all the muscle." Codebreaker flexes one of those new arms of his. He imagines Kyrie with the kind of build he's gotten now. Yeah, it's definitely strange that he's the one of the two who grew muscle after all that training. Even if the strigoi's enhanced strength means Codebreaker isn't actually stronger.

"Hit it off"? Now that was an interesting choice of words. Especially given the context of discussing their respective dating lives. While it's true they've built a certain rapport with each other, they're not exactly... well, Codebreaker was aware of the incompatibility, at least.

Kyrie chuckles and gives Codebreaker's arm a little pat. "I wouldn't say as much." He says, giving the wolfen's bicep a little squeeze. "That is a well-earned muscle and it will serve you well if you can maintain it. You should be proud." The wolf-man smiles just a bit. "And I do not see it harming your search for a partner, either." He adds, in an almost playful tone that sounds downright alien coming from him.

...He was supposed to take his hand off at some point, wasn't he?

"Well I did earn it! Mostly, b did some heavy lifting near the end. And that's why it feels weird. You were with me the whole time but Absum won't let you bulk up. You should be up here with me, getting to enjoy this. Well, maybe not all the way up here."
Codebreaker winks at him.
"We've kind of had a thing going on with me being bigger than you and I'd hate to ruin that dynamic."

He chuckles to himself. "Really I should mention it to Absum some time that I think you've learned your lesson, even if I like what he did. He..." His eyes drift down to Kyrie still squeezing his arm.

Despite the natural bustle of the bar, there's a pointed, awkward silence as Kyrie quickly withdraws his hand and returns his attention to his drink.

Kyrie going quiet in the middle of a conversation isn't anything new, of course. But most often it's a contemplative sort of silence; the sort that implies every word he says is deliberate and sincere. Or maybe a brooding sort of silence, where he doesn't say anything because he's too wrapped up in his thoughts and he isn't intent on sharing them.

Not the embarrassed, nervous-energy-laden silence that he seems caught up in now. The sort that comes with uncomfortable glances backward to check if Codebreaker is still looking at him. It really feels like he is. Even when he's looking away.

Strange how that's only now bothering him.

Codebreaker gives Kyrie some space, taking a minute to finish his drink. But this is really weird. Why is he getting these weird embarrassed vibes from Kyire? He's getting the distinct feeling it has to do with him. Kyrie seemed to be really bothered by that shirt thing. He even got full images.
"Hey, are you okay? Was the wink too much? Sorry."

He tries to be as quiet as possible so he isn't overheard.
"You seem really embarrassed. Is it being out in public with me? I mean I've got beers back home if you'd rather we stay home." Maybe Kyrie is just feeling weird about going to a bar. Maybe he used to do that when he was a soldier and now he's...well, what he is now.

...Fantastic. Now it's weird.

Kyrie made it weird.

"...This is fine." Kyrie breathes, exhaling through his teeth and fumbling with his money pouch for the price of the next round. "I...I'm fine. It must be some lupine instinct I did not properly rein in."

Kyrie really shouldn't try to bullshit him like that. Even if Codebreaker couldn't read him through supernatural means, his face might as well be a neon sign blaring out that he wasn't being entirely honest.

The wolf-man takes a deep breath and steadies himself. The feeling will pass, he's sure. Everyone does embarrassing things every now and then.

heeuuugh!

...Though usually not back-to-back like that.

One and a half drinks. There is no way in hell that's enough to get someone that drunk, even a strigoi. Especially a strigoi! Kyrie is not okay. He slaps an apologetic coin onto the counter for the bartender.
"Okay, okay buddy. You're clearly sick. Come on."
Unfortunately for Kyrie, things are going to get more embarrassing for him as Codebreaker (and those strong arms he can't stop thinking about) attempts to get a supportive grip on Kyrie to walk him out of the bar.
