Then you may want to find a way to help us survive.
Dangers don't wait for us to be ready.

It's not like the queen is in any hurry to die and be replaced. But Sekhmet could do the job; even if she would take the hive in a deeply weird direction, something would survive.

"Couldn't you put some creatures in a safe place far away from the Hives? Leave them with the resources to start again in case the Firstborn manage to destroy everything else?" Sekhmet, without realizing it, basically is that backup. She has a nascent queen out in the woods with a few flights of workers and guards, hardly an obvious position.

We did. But that safe place doesn't have a princess who can lead us yet. And we want to preserve as much as possible. In a way, what you have here at GLoG is another reserve.
The queen doesn't even think about where this other safe place is. That's need-to-know information, and Sekhmet doesn't need to know unless she actually takes over.

Of course if Sekhmet does take over, then anyone who does know (outside of the creatures there, of course) will be dead. Oh, okay. Right. Uh, good luck, I guess?" She doesn't have much else to say right now.

[Babbing Grounds]

At Sophie's command, a blast of sand rolls away from the mound, the roots receding away from the teeth and the teeth themselves parting slightly... for about half a second.

Fortunately, half a second is more time than Khannie's going to need. It's a rare day that giving a giant mouth some bubblegum is a reliable means of keeping it open, but here it seems to work just fine.

...-ish.

The mouth is already trying to clamp itself shut again, and it doesn't seem as though the spirits Braon's creating on the spot are sapient enough to even have a concept of what's happening; Khannie's shadow illusions are going to be up against the equivalent of inanimate objects.

However, attempting to dislodge the cocoon from the surrounding earth proves to be an impossible (or near enough to count) task; the roots that comprise it extend to a lot of surrounding vegetation, so Khannie would essentially be trying to move the entire mound.

And there's also the small problem of said illusion being as much of a physical impediment as the teeth were. But surely they have an answer for that, right?

"Now... release her." Sophie puts her shotgun aside and commands the vines to release Braon, before striding up and trying to forcefully pull her out of there. She seems to have more strength than she ought to, as if the fire in her soul compensated for her small physical stature. The glow around her intensifies, to the point where the disc on her forehead is subsumed by it.

Khannie looks like she's in some sort of...

Trance?

She's extended her mind into the illusion she created, giving her fine control over how it moves and oozes and goops.

Which is important!

Since she is VERY busy keeping the vines and rocks at bay.

Hopefully nothing decides to assault the insentient dragon on the ground!

"An interesting suggestion. What role do you imagine yourself playing in my therapy?"
[Sophie's Office]

"Whatever you require in a therapist's assistant. I'd help you before, during and after sessions, if needed." Dahlia replies without visibly acknowledging Sophie's change in countenance, perfectly professional. Isn't that what Sophie would want? She can do professional, even if it wasn't her default setting. Which it is.

"Zara's already working here, and I need something to do while we're here. Works out well, yes? I do hope you don't close too late though, that would cut into my hunting time." She pauses, though whether she let it slip on purpose or not is unclear. "I help to cull the population of the local megadeer back home." She's good at it, too.

That sounds terrible.

Khannie can't even imagine what it would be like not to be able to feel things toward her friends. Toward her dad. Or at least that's how she's interpreting what's being said. She is, after all, an almost fourteen year old girl and so her life experience is pretty limited. Especially when it comes to very uncommon mind states like this.

"Is there medicine for it or something?" she asks.

There's medicine for people who feel depressed, right? Why not medicine for this, too?
[Lakeside Arts and Crafts]

"Even if there was, why would I want it?" Dahlia responds, stopping her carving to look Khannie dead in the eyes. "Would you rob me of what makes me me just so I conform to society? Considering I'm high-functioning. Food for thought, yes?"

After a short silence, she returns to carving. "I'm being facetious. Suffice it to say that I've been trained to utilize it to the fullest. And, I actually like our girlfriend, so there's that." Don't people say romance helps to cure all ills? Depending on who you ask and on what time of the year, that is.

"One important thing here is confidentiality." Sophie is well and truly back to her usual professional demanor. "You can't participate in the sessions without the patients' consent. It's very important that everything that happens during the sessions stays between me and them. But you can help me with other tasks that don't require disclosing such sensitive information."

[Babbing Grounds]

And one last time, the roots recede at Sophie's command, enabling her to pull the panting, dead-eyed fiendling from their midst. As she exits the mound, the entire structure comes apart, its purpose summarily defeated by Braon's absence. They did have just the one job, after all.

With that done, she shouldn't have any problems-

crk!

The ground beneath her (and possibly Khannie) suddenly buckles under their weight, suddenly made quite unstable by some unseen forces, Roots snap out of the ground and try to wrap their way around the both of them, as well as the woman they're trying to rescue, and a ring of stones starts forming a few paces away around them, the individual parts pulling themselves out of the ground with such force that the dirt seems to almost explode from it.

They are, in the metaphorical sense as well as the literal, not out of the woods yet.

[Lakeside Arts and Crafts]

Khannie considers that question for a little bit.

Because she takes lots of things pretty seriously, the weirdo.

Why WOULD someone want something like that?

"If I couldn't feel pain I would want that fixed. 'cuz even though pain hurts it lets me know I did something wrong. I might hurt myself really bad and wouldn't even notice. But... it sounds like the thing you have is different? You don't feel pain from emotions, right? So you can't feel when you hurt yourself or hurt someone else. And that would make it easier to keep hurting other people 'cuz you wouldn't notice. Or it wouldn't matter? I dunno I'm not in your head. I just know there are lots of villains who hurt people and don't care. Caring seems important."

Khannie likes caring. For her family. For her friends. Even for the strangers she's helped.

The robbing comment gets a frown out of her. "People change things about themselves that they don't like all the time. Sometimes people change for themselves. And sometimes for the people they care about."

Khannie is VERY well acquainted with that practice.

[Babbing Grounds]

Ugh.

Khannie is getting absolutely sick of things trying to grab her.

She proves to be as slippery as a fish, wriggling right out of the grasping roots and leaving them dusted with prismatic glitter. There's no way she's going to let her get herself snagged like that. Not a chance.

"Are you okay Sophie?" she asks, blinking a bit at the brilliant light shed from the now EXTREMELY BRIGHT camp counselor. The brilliance refracts off Khannie's tiny scales, bathing her in a nimbus of rainbow light.

Sophie's shotgun flies into her hand and she squeezes the trigger three times. Two of them release gouts of golden, searing flame that aim to burn through the roots, reducing them to ash. The third is a focused blast of fire and golden light, aiming at one of the stones that emerge from the ground. Specifically, at a weak spot she notices, aiming to split it and create a gap in the closing barrier.

"I'm fine. Be ready to help me carry her if this doesn't work." She goes to take off Braon's necklace.

[Babbing Grounds]

All it takes is a firm yank to dislodge the tooth-necklace.

And the moment it's gone, things quiet down immensely. The vines stop writhing. The ground gets firm again. The stony teeth just... stop in their tracks. And even Braon stops screaming.

It's more of a hoarse crying now. She must still be in a lot of pain, but no longer has the strength to properly express it via the expulsion of massive amounts of air through her throat. She can't even keep her eyes open, nor does she seem all that inclined to.

Amidst all the chaos that suddenly stopped, the fact that Braon is in labor suddenly stands out.

[Babbing Grounds]

The immediate thing that strikes Khannie is the smell.

Having a human nose was both a blessing and a curse. You couldn't smell things as well, but you also couldn't smell things as well. Cheasadh no doubt understood this well enough, but she hadn't ever had a human nose to compare things to. Having a dragon nose isn't quite like having a gnome nose, that much Khannie is sure of. But it's REALLY different from having a human nose. She tastes things more so than she smells them. It's... weird. And kind of hard to put into words.

It's part of the reason why being around sweets is so tough.

Just being nearby means she can already taste them but they aren't in her mouth.

It's torture.

But anyway!

Khannie tastes something in the air as the magic fades that is absolutely unmistakable. She's only encountered it once or twice while being around town and it is a taste that she immediately recognizes.

"She's having her baby."

Sophie was expecting more side-effects when she took off the necklace. Why did Braon wear it in the first place? Why not lock it in a box until she's ready to drag NarTheoLoq out of it and destroy him? Well, no time to deliberate now.

"Yes, she is. Go to the campsite, quickly, and get someone who can carry her safely. I'll stay with her."

[Babbing Grounds]

It's around this point that Braon grabs ahold of Sophie's hand; the one that isn't currently holding a bound demon. She's not gentle in the slightest; the second her fingers are there, she's squeezing like she's making an earnest attempt at forcing Sophie's fingerbones out through her palms.

"...H-h-hurts..." She manages weakly, gasping out the singular, stuttered word between her teeth. "...H-hurts so much... h... he... heAAAGGH!"

Ooh. That was a bad one. Braon pulls herself back against the ground, pounding her free hand against the dirt and hoarsely yowling in pain. The outburst only lasts for a minute at most, after which she lays still, almost limp, gasping and sobbing quietly.

"I... I c-can't..." She whimpers and shakes her head, eyes squeeze shut. "I can't do this... it's going to kill me..."

Khannie doesn't need to be told twice.

She nods before turning around and bounding back toward the campsite!

Who could she ask for help? Who would be around this late? She's got no idea she usually isn't here in the evening like this! She begins dashing from cabin to cabin, looking for someone who can help carry Braon to the infirmary. If she can't find anyone fast enough she's just going to grab a stretcher and hurry back as quickly as she can with the equipment clutched in her forelegs whilst bouncing like a panicked crow.

Khannie isn't exactly build for hurrying on her hind legs but she can do it.

It just looks really goofy.

Sophie winces only briefly when Braon squeezes her hand. She can't ease Braon's pain, but she can lend her the strength to withstand it. So she will.

"Breathe deeply, Braon, and be strong. It's almost over. You just need to endure this for a while longer. Then your children will be here."

Her words resonate with an assurance that everything will be alright and feed some of her relentless willpower into Braon's mind. This might, at least, help her endure the pain.

[Babbing Grounds]

Endure, yes. But Sophie's efforts do little to ease the pain and it's not long before Braon's back squeezing the blood out of Sophie's fingers.

Though, from the standpoint of psychological braces, there's a marked improvement. She's gone from despairing at the potential of death by childbirth and graduated to viciously cursing out a dozen or so people; all male, or at least with male names. And then Sekhmet and Sophie tacked onto the end for good measure.

That's an improvement, right?

Fortunately, when Khannie gets back, apart from hearing a few words she's not going to want to repeat in front of Jace, there's going to be very few obstacles between her and getting Braon to the infirmary. Even fewer if Sophie's willing to help her with the stretcher.

Babbing Grounds

Sophie might be able to feel the power inside the necklace now she's holding it; if there's a way to store Essence for later and use it from that stored state, the tooth feels a bit like that. If she's touching the tooth itself, then right now there's nothing happening. If she tried drawing upon it for power, then things might change... But NarTheoLoq recognises Sophie, and realises she's somehow stronger than the last time they met.

Khannie is definitely thankful that she didn't get accosted by any trees this time around.

Getting accosted by trees sucks.

It took her a few minutes to receive the stretcher and in that span of time she spotted that little horse guy? She really hasn't ever talked to him much. He just seemed to be around sometimes. But after a brief explanation she manages to enlist his aid for the moving of laboring fiendlings.

"I got a stretcher from the infirmary Sophie!" she calls out as she bounds to a stop and sets it down on the ground next to Braon. "And I got some help, too!"

Just a matter of carting Braon back to the infirmary now, right?

That'll probably be a better place for having a baby than out in the middle of the woods.

Sophie never thought she'd be relieved to hear curses and threats directed towards her, yet here she is. She glares at the necklace but saves dealing with it until later.

"Excellent. Let's get here there as fast as we can."

Then she might have some explaining to do regarding the very visible glow around her. But for now, Braon has to be delivered to the infirmary.

[Babbing Grounds -> Infirmary]

Even in the midst of what promised to be a difficult labor, Braon can't help but get a flash of deja vu from being put on the stretcher and carried away to the infirmary.

Once she's there, the staff quickly set to work preparing her as best they can. One of them politely escorts Khannie, Sophie, and their enlisted help out of the delivery room; they've done wonderfully, but now they need to be outside so they're not underfoot.

What follows is several hours of muffled screaming and cursing from said delivery room.

Eventually, when the profanity dies down, one of the nurses pokes her head back out and gestures to Sophie, a big smile on her face. "Come on in. She asked for you by name." She turns to Khannie and adds, "She also asked for the 'little dragon girl', which I think means you." She winces. "...Might not be the exact phrasing she used, but there are children present."

[Babbing Grounds -> Infirmary]

Khannie, for her part, won't be sticking around for the whole ordeal. She came here for a reason and can't stay all night. After all, she was sneaking out of the dorms to be here in the first place. She had some Spooktober decoration ideas and she was still wanting to test those out. That takes some time, of course. But not several hours.

She'll poke her head back into the infirmary, once again in her human girl disguise, and tells Sophie, "I'm going to head back to the dorms now. Send me a message with updates, okay? I'll be back again tomorrow."

Which, sadly, means the 'little dragon girl' won't be around when the ordeal is all over with.

Khannie is a busy teen she has places to be and trouble to avoid.

"Of course. I'll tell you everything later." The good news about the wait is that Sophie's bright glow has dimmed and finally gone out. She'd have evaded any questions about it. She goes into the infirmary and smiles. As traumatic as this has all been and as much as Braon strains her considerable patience, this is still a happy occasion and the children are beautiful. "Congratulations, Braon," she says earnestly.

"...Thank you." The fiendling manages a small smile, almost reflexively cooing and wiggling her finger over her newborn's mouth; he quickly latches on and begins gumming at the tip of her finger. "...I, um... I wanted you to be the first to meet them. And to say I'm sorry. I know I've been a right pain these past few d... well, weeks, really..." She looks up at Sophie and gives her a sheepish smile, managing to bare her needly teeth in a non-hostile way for once. "I don't think I'd be here right now without you. It... it just seems right, is what I'm saying." She gently brushes a lock of stringy black hair out of her infant son's face. "...His name's Cain. Cain Hexenborne." She gestures over at the cribs. "Cathal, Tadhg, Ciara, Niamh." She introduces the others, pointing to each of them in turn. "...It... took me a little while to find names for all of them."

This is... a lot more than Sophie expected from Braon. An actual admission she was wrong? She's not sure if she can take credit for it, but she's glad to hear it all the same. She still has questions about the amulet, but now is not the time to ask.

Sophie isn't surprised in the least. Braon has indicated before that she'll be keeping the children.

"It won't be easy, but we're all here to help you. That does mean you need to let us help you, though. And take care of yourself."

Braon has never shown much care about what happens to herself, taking risks and facing danger for the thrill of it. As a mother, such actions have consequences for more than just herself.
