[Grounds] (Open Scene)
Braon really couldn't care less about Spooktober's rapid approach. She wasn't a particularly avid adherent to the holiday; most of the time, it was basically just an excuse to put on an outrageous costume and party. But, whereas that usually involved a degree of both flexibility and drinking, to her, this year's celebration would be more or less a non-option.
So for now, she's just going on a walk, on a beautiful September evening with no significance whatsoever.
Not to the rest of the world, at least. But she really should have been paying more attention, as tonight is almost exactly two-hundred and eighty days after a fateful encounter in Trog's.
At first, she doesn't think much of it; the demon she wears around her neck sees fit to torment her every now and then with the visceral sensation of something trying to bite and claw its way out of her. In the past few months, these incidents have become more frequent, but not much more intense, and she's almost gotten used to them. So when she finds herself in the throes of another one, it's more annoying than alarming.
Until it doesn't subside.
No, actually, that gnawing sensation inside of her seems to just be getting worse. And not just by a bit; the intensity seems to have doubled over the last minute, and doesn't show any sign of stopping.

In the distance, a woman can be heard screaming in agony and terror.

Normally Khannie would be in the dorms right now.
But she had finished up her homework for the evening and she had this REALLY great idea for some Spooktober things and technically she isn't supposed to be off campus at the moment but it's an unofficial official rule that EVERYONE sneaks off campus when they aren't supposed to and you only get in trouble if you get caught.
Which is why she didn't take Riftline over to GLoG like she normally does.
Instead she flew.
Khannie doesn't... well, she doesn't fly that often. Or fly just for the FUN of it. Or anything like that. It's a really, really pointed reminder of just how not-human she is. But flying away from campus under the cloak of invisibility is a pretty solid way to get away undetected. So that's what she did. She's not that high up. Maybe ten or fifteen feet above the tops of the trees just to make it less likely that she smacks into a taller tree sticking up above all the others.
It's isn't a bad evening to be traveling. It's really pretty, honestly. But that really isn't what Khannie is focusing on. She's busy thinking about her decoration ideas.
But then there's that scream.
"Oh heck."
Glog is a safe place. That fact is an absolute in Khannie's mind. So to hear a cry of pain and terror like that feels almost defiling of Glog's sanctity. And good hero that Khannie is, she heads straight for the sound.

Being the hero that she is, Khannie should know by now that answering a cry for help, even an implicit one, is usually a surefire way to run into trouble.

The tree in question doesn't seem to be ordinary, at least. It has a knotted, twisted face growing out of its bark, leering at the trespassing dragon and flashing a set of wooden but otherwise eerily-human teeth. If Khannie cares to look, she'll notice its "eyes" (already misaligned knotholes) are also toothy mouths, these simply held open while it "looks" at her.
The tree waves a bramble-covered branch at her, making a threatening shooing gesture. It's not going to let her through.
Meanwhile, the screaming still hasn't stopped. Whoever that is, her situation isn't exactly resolving itself. Not favorably, at least.

Is this another one of those animated things the Glog Hag makes that she had heard about? Probably. Did it see her soooooul or something stupid like that? Probably. Ugh. What is with all these jerks just blowing right past her invisibility? What's the point of being invisible if everyone just so happens to carry around bags of flour to ruin your day?
Alright.
While she's pretty sure her breath weapon could PROBABLY blast this dumb thing to splinters just the THOUGHT of using violence at Glog makes her feel sick to her stomach. She needs to trick it and thankfully she's well equipped to be tricky.

"Khannie" soon finds herself released from the tree's grip. Rather forcefully, even. Overhand, directed at a pathway/game trail back the way she came (though obviously, she didn't come down it).
"AWAAAAAAAY!!!!!" The tree shrieks at her, all three mouths screaming at maximum volume.
Then it notices something crawling around on its branches. Which it then proceeds to beat against the ground, as though trying to dislodge it. If Khannie's quick, she'll probably be out of its grip before that translates into mashed dragon, but either way, it'll keep smacking at the earth until it's convinced the mystery pest is gone.

Sophie is still at GLoG when she hears the scream. She knows it's Braon, somehow. Something in the scream tells her that. Or rather, her supernatural senses, sharpened by the Solar Essence coursing through them. She takes off in that direction without hesitation, knowing she can summon her shotgun instantly if it's needed (and she hopes it's not).

And sure enough, a half hour or so later and armed with boxes of napkin ghosts the time has come to see!
Khannie lays out a large beach towel on the ground and gestures at it.
"Okay! Who wants to hang some decorations first? Just stand on there and imma make it into a FLYING towel!"
Khannie sounds very confident that she can pull this off.

They are prone to infighting and disagreement. It is possible that they can be persuaded or coerced into not completing their mission. That's only happened a few times in their long history. The queen's hopes are not high.
We could fight them directly, but we would be disadvantaged in an open battle. The Hive once had creatures designed for battle like this, but none of them made it to the Nexus, nor have they found a good replacement.
We may be able to force the to give up by targeting their teleportation machines or other important infrastructure; there can only be so many of them here...

Khannie has many tools for avoiding conflict and sneaky shadow trick is definitely one of the more potent ones. There are ways to stop her, sure, but the important part is that it isn't obvious. And grumpy trees in a spooky forest really aren't very well equipped to create the patches of bright light that would be a barrier to her. And so, unimpeded, she hurries toward the sound, little more than a patch of colorful sparkles racing through the darkness.
Is the Glog Hag hurt? It sure SOUNDS like it. But what could possibly be hurting her in Glog of all places?
What sort of evil could be powerful enough to cause harm here?
The very thought chills Khannie to the bone. But she has to make sure whatever it is can't be a threat to her friends.

One of the more advanced ones that can interact with objects as if it were real, though with the added deception of having even a magical signature like an actual living thing. The illusions have no true intelligence, so it will not be able to answer questions, but it is evidence that Khannie is likely investigating as well. The little hero is incorrigible.

Cheasadh wants to be on the towel, but she's got enough self-control to let the smaller children get on first. She can go later, or if there's enough space for everyone upon the inferior flying carpet.

As such, Khannie's illusion is clear to her and she also notices that the tree is animated by on of Braon's enchantments. She backs away, retreating from the branch, but not reaching for her shotgun yet.
"No, you're the one who should LEAVE." She pours her willpower into the last word, trying to force the spirit to vacate the tree, just like she'd done with the one in Sakura's clothes before.

As such, Khannie's illusion is clear to her and she also notices that the tree is animated by on of Braon's enchantments. Somewhere on the bark, a single grain of sand materializes into being; Sophie could take it with her if she wanted to, but being the inconsequentially small item it is, there's no particularly compelling reason to.

Khannie pats Cheasadh on the shoulder and offers her a knowing smile. Her sacrifice in the name of easily excited children won't be forgotten.
"Well, I practiced this with me standing on it and I don't know how many goblins I weight but I'm gunna bet it's more than two," Khannie replies to her friend. The she gives her hands a shake and holds them out in front of her. "Spirits of Spooktober! Come forth to lift us so we can hang spooky decorations in your honor! I call on you to rise up! Rise up! RISE UP!"
As she speaks she lifts her hands higher and higher as a goofy ghost face appears on the towel moments before it begins gently lifting into the air, its corners fluttering below it!
It will feel like the goblins are standing on a smooth, flat platform that the towel is covering. Slowly it floats upwards until the rafters of the main cabin's porch are within reach of the two passengers.

Khannie springs out of the gloom in a spray of glitter like a fish leaping out of a pond. She's undisguised at the moment and a bit at a loss. She's pretty sure Braon is buried in the dirt but what should she do?

"Sophie what's going on Braon was screaming and the trees are weird," she asks, scooting away from the mound a bit to let Sophie work.
Khannie is clearly disturbed by whatever is going on. Glog is a safe place to her and whatever... this is doesn't feel safe. And what's going on with Sophie she's NEVER seen her like this before.

Sophie does pick up the grain. Since it's Braon's magic crystallised, it might not be wise to leave it behind. When she sees the mound, it's obvious Braon is under there, in a lot of pain. She seems to have created the mound as a defense mechanism.

If Khannie can see her, there's something different to the kindly therapist. She's powerful and commanding now, which manifests itself as the intensifying golden light around her.

As before, Sophie's command is received and obeyed by the spirits in the mound, and a steady trickle of sand confirms that they are, in fact, getting out of her way. But she soon finds that they're about as reasonable as a swarm of bees, all told; the ones she banishes are quickly replaced by a whole new throng of equally-belligerent spirits, resulting in no net progress.
Though there is some motion resulting from this.
With the spirits dissipating for a second, the branches and rock and dirt temporarily recede, in a motion resembling a great big mouth in the earth opening up, revealing Braon wrapped up among a series of roots below the surface, struggling against them even as they forcibly gag her and wrap around her in a thick wooden cacoon.
Just as quickly as the mouth opened, it closes again, ever-so-slightly off-center, just enough for some of the stony teeth to narrowly miss Braon in the process. if Sophie keeps doing as she does, she's going to have a chewed-up fiendling by the end of it... somewhat counterproductive, if the goal is to help her.
Of course, Khannie might have her own idea as to how to help. The construct she sees in front of her now isn't entirely unfamiliar...

Sophie looks over to Khannie and sees that she's real this time. The golden glow around her doesn't dim. Khannie's heroic instinct remains strong, it seems... and she's a dragon now. Well, she has always been a dragon. Or has she? Sophie has a vague feeling she hasn't, somehow. No time to dwell on it, though.
"Braon is being hurt by a necklace she wears, that has a demon bound to it. She's creating all of this to protect herself, in panic. I can't banish the spirits long enough to get her out and if I keep doing it, the mound will close on her."

So long as someone doesn't smash it or something I can keep it going however long I need," Khannie replies, standing a little straighter and looking really proud of herself. "Making stuff that was solid was tough but now that I've got it figured out it isn't so bad."
Time limits aren't really a problem. Which is handy.
She grins over at Tuskfang.
"Sure is!" she retorts. Zabb is an angel friend of Tuskfang's, right? Like that weird girl Lapis? Tuskfang sure has a lot of unusual friends. "Hey you wanna go next? Once this corner is done we'll do some more on the other side."
Khannie's friends are likely aware that Khannie did not actually conjure up any spirits of Spooktober. She's an illusionist, not a necromancer. All the song and dance was just to make it more fun for the other kids.

Khannie has such a hard time accepting what she really is if only there was someone compassionate and professional enough to help her overcome her confused feelings so she can be at peace with herself.

A muffled shriek and a violent spasm from the ground-mouth serve to remind both of them that there really isn't a whole lot of time to bat ideas around; while they can scarcely afford to be reckless, the situation is going to resolve itself (likely unfavorably) without them.
The roots feeding into the mound take this opportunity to expand themselves out, forming a sort of latticework over the stony teeth. Sophie might have a hard time getting it open by the same means again. And this can't be good for the oxygen situation down there, either...

"No time to deliberate. Get ready." Sophie reaches out into... thin air and is suddenly holding an intricately-decorated shotgun with a golden barrel. She aims it and fires, the barrel spewing a gout of golden flame that should scour the roots efficiently without actually producing much heat. She then takes a deep breath and commands the spirits again:
"Out of MY WAY!"
As she does so, the golden glow around her intensifies and a golden disc shines on her forehead, representing a sun in eclipse. She pours a lot more power into this command, to get the spirits to back off. It's now or never.

Khannie is already up on her hind legs as Sophie begins, cupping her claws as she focuses her intent on what she wants to create. The shadows around her stretch, flowing like black putty speckled with glitter and congealing into a goopy looking pink orb floating in place.
As soon as the way is clear she hurls it into the pit with deft precision, the orb popping with a loud hiss as the pink taffy begins to rapidly expand. Khannie closes her eyes and fills the illusion with her will and intent, directing its explosive growth to surround the wooden cocoon and shove it upward while at the same time wedging the mouth open with its goopy bulk.
Should all go well the mouth should be choking on bubblegum while the cocoon remains within reach.
When all this happens the color in one of Khannie's butterfly like wings drains out, the glittering dust feeding the shadows to give them substance.

No, we'll use other means now. As for yourself, just be careful. Don't send your hound or others outside of GLoG and its woods - where they might be seen from above - and the Dukes will be stopping their normal patrols.

If the Firstborn mobilize, it is not unlikely that everyone in Ell and Eurus will die. If that happens, you will be in charge. Be prepared.

I'm not ready to be in charge! Sekhmet protests. She doesn't realize it, but she's more ready than she's ever been. She's grown into her role as a demon queen, she could grow into a role as ruler of the Hive too. But she's not thinking about that, she's thinking about how much it would upend her life again, right after she got it to a nice orderly place she's happy with.
